Lamborghini hasn’t had a production SUV since its positively wonky LM002, but every once in a while, rumors circulate that the automaker is looking to get back into the multi-passenger fold. Likely seeing the overwhelming success Porsche has seen with its Cayenne range, the automaker is reportedly considering using a version of the same corporate cousin platform to underpin a new SUV.

Lamborghini, like Porsche, is controlled by Volkswagen, so it would not be much of a stretch for the Italian arm to consider dipping into VW’s platform bin to utilize the Touareg’s underpinnings.

According to Car and Driver’s German correspondent, the company is planning a Touareg-based SUV “in the spirit of the monstrous LM002.”

The LM002, in case you’ve forgotten, was a monstrous four-door pickup powered by a 5.2-liter V12. Right up there with the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG and the Hummer H1 in terms of its manliness quotient, it was originally designed for military use but caught on with Sheikhs the world over.

No doubt aimed directly at wealthy Middle Eastern and Russian buyers, a reborn Lamborghini SUV would certainly be heavily differentiated from its Porsche and VW cousins. It’s unclear whether the “spirit” would use the SUT-style configuration of the LM002 or if it would keep a more conventional two-box SUV form.

File this one away as a mere rumor for now, but Lamborghini has been known to surprise.
