Next-gen Saab 9-5 to feature 1.6L turbo

In the face of rising fuel prices and continued concerns about the environment, General Motors’ Saab division is slated for a bit of downsizing in the coming years. Although a smaller Saab 9-3 is likely still two or three years away, the new way of thinking at the Swedish brand should first show up in the next 9-5.

The next-generation Saab 9-5 will make its first appearance at March’s Geneva Motors Show, complete with a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine underhood – a 1.6L turbocharged unit.

While the 9-5’s engine will be downsizing, the car itself will actually grow due to its Epsilon II underpinnings. However, the new powerplant should be up to the task of carrying the extra heft as it will generate the same power as larger engines, thanks to its high-pressure turbo.

According to Channel 4, 9-5 buyers will also have the choice of a 260 horsepower 2.8L V6, as well as a 2.0L diesel. A 2.0L turbocharged flex-fuel engine will also likely be part of the mix.

Further down the line, Saab will add a 2.9L diesel option and the brand’s XWD all-wheel drive system.

The next-generation 9-5 should hit dealer showrooms next fall.

The engines are getting smaller… but the cars are STILL getting bigger. Did noone mention to the engineers that the best way to reduce costs, increase fuel economy, increase performance, and reduce emissions is to MAKE THE CARS SMALLER.
Sheesh… I feel like our automobiles are being designed by a bunch of two year olds… just because you have more does not mean it is better.

The engines may be getting smaller, but they’re also more powerful.

Besides, this is a base engine. We’ll probably get the 2.0 and 2.8 here.
