When Spyker acquired Saab the exotic automaker made it clear that the focus would be on restoring profitability on core models and increasing volume as soon as possible. This meant that starting new projects, like the revival of the classic and diminutive 92 would have to wait a few years before getting funding and attention.
Then, not long after the merger, Saab ’s CEO, Victor Muller, came out and said that they would like to quickly introduce a small entry-level car that was inspired largely by the original Saab 92. Quickly, rumors surfaced that Saab was in talks with BMW in regards to sharing the MINI platform, but the now Dutch-owned company refused to confirm these talks.
Now, Muller has publicly announced that Saab is in talks with three different automakers about a potential tie-up to develop a new 92, according to Bloomberg. Muller stopped short of revealing which automakers he was in talks with, citing non-disclosure documents, but he did reveal that as part of the plan Muller is looking for a partner that would help front some of the development costs.
Muller also made it clear that the desire was to achieve a very retro design that was true to the original teardrop shape found on the classic 1950′s Saab 92.
