Saleen goes up for sale

11/10/2008, 1:02 PM

By Drew Johnson

It seems like every day there is some headline involving the economic downturn and at least one of the major automakers, but very rarely is there anything on the smaller manufacturers. But even the little guys are feeling the economic strain, with Saleen recently announcing that its operations are up for sale.

Saleen is best known for tuning Ford products, but also produces the S7 supercar and has plans to produce the S5S concept shown at last March’s New York Auto Show. In addition to working on its own creations, Saleen also built the GT for Ford and has a hand in the production of the Dodge Viper.

The automaker has been in a bit of turmoil since Hancock Park Associates purchased a majority stake in Saleen in 2004, which ultimately lead to the departure of Steve Saleen, the company’s founder. High gas prices and the recent economic downturn have further eroded the business, leading to the ‘For Sale’ sign in Saleen’s front yard.

According to Automotive News, Saleen’s board is hoping for a quick sale, with a time table for a signed deal set for early next year. Saleen isn’t wasting any time getting the ball rolling as it has already sold 20 Ford Mustang GTs, office equipment and factory equipment at auction.

Saleen cars are outrageously overpriced wannabe cars with little originality in their design. Many mistake the S7 for a McLaren F1. The S7 is fast in a straight line, but at the limits its very twitchy, in regular traffic its a nightmare to drive, and handling is nothing to brag about. I just can’t imagine anyone wanting to pay a half million for a cheaply built car made from off the shelf parts with an outdated pushrod V8. People spending that much on a car want something with a multivalve hightech engine and a sophisticated dual clutch gear box. The S7 is a basic car designed to look like a European exotic. Its a poser car, not the real deal, and thats why its going under. People don’t want to spend a half million on a basic home made car that only delivers straight line performance. Goodbye Saleen lol

You have driven a Saleen S7,

“The S7 is fast in a straight line, but at the limits its very twitchy, in regular traffic its a nightmare to drive, and handling is nothing to brag about.”

” WOW ” and all this time I thought I was the only one, if you can please remind me how to start one???
And if you have to ask I have a lot of time behind the wheel of not only that car but other exotic also…
So can please remind me how to start one…

Here’s a question for everyone…. Who do you think would be able to take Saleen over and really continue to develop, and create new/ better super cars?

The S7 is an amazing car, planet_drive, I agree with you on the assessment of the rest of their product line, which is overpriced and lacks a real focal point, but don’t go about talking trash about the S7, it’s been raced in many different series quite successful and one of the major features is its amazing aerodynamic and relatively light weight, which translate into amazing handling.
It generates its own weight in downforce at around 160 miles and could “theoretically” pull a Men in Black move and drive upside-down. Few (if maybe the Maserati MC12) can claim such amazing aerodynamic design, and similar light weight…

Well I can’t say that I’m surprised. If they ran operations the way they stand behind their warranty it sort of shocking they’ve stayed in business this long. I say good riddance.

So go one continuing your boastfull nature of driving all kinds of exotics. Such a loser lol Your the perfect customer for a Saleen lol

planet_drive, your assessment of the S7 is the stupidest ****ing assessment I’ve ever read. You drove it around the city and think you have a valid assessment of the car. If you really knew the development of this car you would understand that it’s not meant to be driven around town like a luxury car. A true supercar in the S7 is never comfortable around town because they aren’t meant to be driven strictly around town.

The car is an amazing piece of machinery even to todays standards and it will go down in automotive history as a car that pushed the limits.

I’ve never heard one person confuse it’s design with that of the Mclarens, they both have very distinct features.

A 73mph slalom and 1.10g’s on the skidpad are pretty ****ty too I guess. That archaic V8 also managed to **** on the “hightech” engine that you speak of from the likes of Ferrari, Lambo, Mclaren, MB, and Porsche.
What other car on the road is actually a direct copy of the race version only with more power?

You sound like one of those nutswingers that is jealous that all these low tech American supercars are outdoing their European counterparts. Are you going to come out and bash the SSC next because it has focus headlights?

I feel sorry for anyone who pays 1.2M for an overweight Veyron thinking it’s gonna be the end all performance car on the street. Some people like raw unrefined performance and if it comes at half the price of a Veyron than even better.

These cars are in a class of their own and the fact that you don’t understand that shows how truly ignorant you are.

While you’re at it with all this American engineering bashing why don’t you show me a European “hightech” supercar that can put down 1450whp and 1200lbs/trq out a measly DOHC 5.4L V8 in the Ford GT on stock internals and upgraded fuel system at that. When a Ferrari or Lambo does 220mph in the standing mile let me know, ok?

Umm, terminator, as much as I defended the S7 earlier (see above post), now I’m confused as to what you’re referring to…
No S7 has ever reached those numbers, not even close. The twin Garrett turbos, even with the sports pack offered for a limited time by Saleen, never managed to get more than a hugh (don’t get me wrong…) 1000whp.

Regardless, 1000whp is more than any rear-wheel drive car can handle, and really that was more of an aberration than anything else. The standard twin-turbo, with ~750whp was plenty for all uses, and as mentioned in my previous post, what made that car special wasn’t so much its power as it was its conception in terms of aerodynamics and weight.

That doesn’t change the fact that planet_drive is, as mentioned above, clearly unaware of the specifics of this car…

I was a Automotive Technician “mechanic” at a high-end auto dealer, that’s how I drove all those cars, 2nd I have a lot of track time not in a S7 but just about every thing els, 3rd It’s a “Sports Car” not a “Grand Touring Car” !!! Here let me school you, A Ferrari F430 is a “Sports Car”, they mostly fill like $#it on the streets but good on the high way, a Aston Martin DB9 is a “Grand Touring Car” a good daily driver, so the Saleen S7 is a “Sports Car”, can you say “Sports Car”, can you? 4th if I had 1/2 a Million Buck$$$, the last thing I will do is blow it all in one car, stupid people like your self do that, I’ll spend less then $100G’s on 2 or 3 cars and go crazy with mods, and 5th if you don’t know what your talking about please, just don’t say nothing, any other post you put up, will just show your level of intelligence, that for what we can see is that of a rock, “NO”… I’m insulting rocks, I take that back…

Ahhh, looks like somebody got there feelings hurt!

AEXCORP, I wasn’t referring to the S7 when talking about the 1000hp. I was just showing Planet Drive how much of an idiot he is for downplaying the American V8 because currently they offer the best performance on the street or anywhere. I was specifically referring to the Heffner twin turbo Ford GT that just put down 1450whp on the the stock internals and an upgraded fuel system. That’s 1200whp on pump gas and 1400whp on race. I would like for him to show me a “hightech” motor that he alludes to as being only in the high end European cars that can do that and still be driven in a normal manner for around $250k

It’s already been proven that the S7 is actually hindered by it’s design in the 200mph range. The car was designed to create huge amounts of downforce which is great on the track but around 190 it really hinders it. Still with 1000hp the cars acceleration is like none other.

American cars aren’t junk, even though almost everyone seems to think so. Cars like the Ford GT, Viper, S7 Twin Turbo, Corvette ZR-1, Cadillac CTS-V (’09 model), Cobalt SS and others show that American vehicles are certainly not lacking in the performance department, and should be able to fix the plastic interior issue on cars like the ZR-1 and Cobalt SS in the future. Anyway, we have the reputation for “American muscle.” But the Caddy is going to be one nice car, if I’m right.
Planet_drive, please keep it clean. No need to poke insults at each other because of differing views.
Maybe SSC should take over Saleen? Then they can have the fastest car in the world as well as the second-most-powerful car in the US (stock, that is). And no, I have yet to hear anyone confuse the McLaren F1 with the S7. Practically the only things that look anything close to the S7 is the front of the Barabus TKR.
Terminator, what focus headlights? I’ve heard the S7 is basically a barely civilized racecar, even though some (perhaps incorrectly) advertise it as a “luxury supercar.” But it’s fast. Very fast.

This might be somewhat off-topic, but something I think would be somewhat funny to me and frustrating to others is something that might happen if a car like the “Veyron GT” someone said Bugatti will make (I’m not sure about that, though) or the Barabus TKR beats the Ultimate Aero and captures the “fastest car” title. First, I think the Aero should still be faster, because its top speed has never been achieved (the car has yet to be on a long enough strip of road). Let’s suppose the Ultimate Aero’s true top speed is 265 and another car such as the Barabus TKR goes 270. The other car would win. However, here’s the funny part. As seen in the Streetfire video with the car, the Aero is only running 14 p.s.i. on its turbos.
I’m thinking, if SSC were to take the car and turn its boost up, so the horsepower the car would be putting out would be more like 1250+ instead of 1183, the top speed would likely increase.
So while another company spends a lot of time and effort (and money) to become #1, SSC simply turns the boost up on their car and wins again. The Streetfire video:

Fastcarguy, the SSC uses Ford Focus HID headlamps which a lot of people tend to give it grief for mainly because they can’t find anything else wrong with it and they are just mad that a tiny company out of my home state annihilated the monster Bugatti for half the price. The parts sharing on these cars is pretty common though. If anyones gonna bash this car for using Focus headlights than you’d have to bash the Diablo too for using 300ZX headlights.

SSC is actually trying to get into the mainstream much like Tesla is right now. SSC has plans for much more economical supercars in sedan form and possibly an AERO with 1000hp in electric motors. Breaking the speed record was just their way of making an entrance and I’m sure there is a lot left in the V8 they are using especially if they are only pushing 14lbs of boost. A lot of people just don’t realize how much power the modern American V8s can make these days, it’s just insane. I won’t leave out the Viper’s V10 and the Supra’s 2JZ inline 6 cause those things are monster by themselves.
