Spies have captured the first images of the next-generation Astra hatchback — which will be sold as a Saturn in North America, an Opel in Germany, Holden in Australia, and a Vauxhall in Britain — at GM’s facility at the Nürburgring. The Astra took a couple of hot laps earlier in the day and it looks as though its development is progressing on schedule.
Rather than a complete departure from the current Astra, the new model will be an evolutionary redesign. GM wants to keep the Astra fresh to compete with the Volkswagen Golf VI and new European Ford Focus.
Besides the 5-door model pictured here, Opel has an estate (“Caravan”), a convertible (“Twin Top”) and the 3-door (“GTC”) in the pipeline, all following the 5-door’s introduction.
The engine range will be similar to that used in today’s cars (75 to 240 hp gas units and 90 to 150 hp diesels), but we expect so-called “green” engines to arrive shortly after the car’s introduction in about one year.

not sure about the back , but this looks like a pre-production mule. I like it. The interior looks like the new Vectra’s , or Insignia as the call, so it should not be too bad. I might even buy one for me Mom.
Its probably gonna be pretty damn lame since its just gonna be another gay Saturn. Yuuuckkaroo!
agreed with heart.
lp no one cares that you’re first, and the fact that you want to be 2nd just shows u have no life, and wait by your computer to be the FIRST… AND SECOND to post.
I feel sorry for the uninformed consumer who buys a 2008 or 2009 Astra, unaware that this car is already more than half-way through its product cycle. GM diminishes all of us.
Add to the fact that in Europe this car comes with 5 motors vs 1 in US. I hope they improved manual and linkage - felt cheap. The engine needs a bit of help as well. I drove small diesel in Europe and it felt more willing then larger engine in States both with manual. Can’t imagine excitement of this set up with a slash box.
so what the ford will kick its ass
LP640, we have one of those Astras and the interior is definitely a weird one… but you get used to it…
Still prefer my E30’s oldschool interior - everything faces the driver, and that’s jus sexy
Heart 64: saturns are not gay.
LMAO. Someone who says “yuuuckkaroo” has no business calling anything thing else gay but himself.
it sould be opel/saturn…
BMW’s are gay.
…but I thought this was a Opel/Vauxhall/Holden/Saturn, not a BMW.
Wow.. in the ever-escalating competition to create the thickest vision-blocking c-pillar possible, it looks like Opel/Saturn has a winner.
Euro Civic Type-R anyone?
Judging from all the storys on LLN about cars testing there the last couple days, the ‘Ring must look like the BQE right now.
Is GM going to put another wimpy 138 hp engine in the 2010 Astra, and then try to convince us that they’re doing this for our benefit, so that we’ll get better gas mileage? It’s so mighty white of them….
The engine is actually not bad. It is not easy to squeeze 138 ponies out of 1.8 L. It is also quite thrifty. I doubt that your average Saturn consumer is looking for Porsche performance. It is a value proposition that wins (or looses).
That face kind of looks like a Renault Megan. But anyway, the Opel Astra used to look like a serious sedan. Now it has “de-volved” into a hatchback. Don’t really agree with the move, but I guess I can put up with it since I won’t be buying anything like this in the near future.
tripleonefagboy says these are pieces of crap with unproven reliability and resale. He says this will in no way affect the sales of anycar fom Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, and Kia. He will also like to add “death to America”.
His Mom is working the streets today sucking dick for drug money if anyone is interested.
