Saturn to ditch ‘Green Line’ nameplate for 2009

06/11/2008, 1:36 PM

By Drew Johnson

After a brief two-year existence, Saturn has announced that it will drop the ‘Green Line’ moniker to identify its hybrid vehicles. The Green Line name and badging first appeared on the Vue hybrid in the summer of 2006 — and has since spread to the Aura hybrid — but Saturn has deemed that the nameplate is confusing shoppers instead of drawing attention to the cars’ hybrid drivetrains.

The change will become effective starting with the 2009 model year.

“It was simply a practical matter. As we expand our hybrid lineup, the names were getting a bit long. It’s hard to write a short sentence about the Saturn Vue Green Line 2-Mode Hybrid,” Saturn spokesman Mike Morrissey told KickingTires.com.

The vehicles will now be known as the Saturn Vue Hybrid and Aura Hybrid.

Despite the change in thinking, the Green Line’s evil twin — the higher-performance Red Line trim — will remain for 2009 and the foreseeable future.

Green = environmental
And it contrasted with the Redline’s redline for speed.
What the hell was so confusing about that?!
I thought this would continue, like the YELLOW line, for cars running on ethanol.
Cancelling thre color scheme: another bad move for GM.
BLUETEC is the real confusing name, anyway. What’s so blue about bluetec?

Who can not understand this? Another example of corporate America underestimating the intelligence of the average consumer, or playing to the lowest common denominator. I thought the play on redline/greenline was kind of clever.

If people are not getting the connection, it is simply because you have not presented it well. I thought this would have been a great basis for an advertising campaign.

Uhhh, I didn’t know Saturn had any gasoling/battery hybrid vehicles, seriously. Then again, I couldn’t care less. I don’t remember many commercials about it though, TV or print…? Am I alone here.

Umm, Mr. Morrissey.. how exactly is slapping a tiny chrome badge with a green line through it making the “name too long”? If they were spelling out “Green Line Hybrid” across the decklid, not only would people know what the hell they were looking at, they might even get the Red Line – Green Line connection. Next we’ll hear VW is dropping the “Rabbit” name because everyone thought the little graphic nameplate on the trunk was simply a “Bunny”.

That mean the Red Line nameplate will also be dropped, or does that name not confuse people?

Since all the battery packs that GM has been putting in their mild hybrids appear to be **** anyways, maybe it will be better off just starting over. I’ve read “Green Line” often referred to as the “Brown Line” out in forum-land. Or maybe they’re referring to the erratic shifting POS 6 speed Autos that GM has been putting in their cars lately. I hated mine with a passion.

Hey GM, how about ditching Saturn all together? This pile of **** you call a brand has been nothing but a failure since its inception in 1990. You pricks killed Oldsmobile, and are about to destroy Pontiac and Buick once and for all, for the sake of Roger Smiths f’n Pet project that turned out to be nothing but a joke to car buyers across the country. Pull the f’n plug you goons, nothing is going to save this waste of space.

SOGM….Impressive

GM is definitely evil but if there weren’t so many people that believe in “Buying American” then GM Ford and Chrysler wouldn’t be around.

Also I have to say that Chrysler is the lesser of the 3 evils

Ford killed people with the Pinto and Crown Vic and in the case of the Pinto they almost had a pad around the gas tank and an airbag but of course Ford cut costs and tragedy occurred. The people’s lives were valued at 200k. (yea yea no one that owned a pinto was worth 200k ha ha)
Also Ford lies about their product by saying it’s tied with Toyota in quality. Also I went on a Volvo test drive a few years back and Volvo compared the XC90 to the MDX and M Class MB. The MDX and M Class were fitted with non OEM 13 or 14 inch wheels. The M and MDX were also the lowest version while the XC90 was the top of the line. FoMoCo’s marketing team should be arrested

GM has always made dangerous and unreliable cars since the days of the Corvair. Their trucks have injured people and set two homes on fire. They are trying the hardest out of the three but their product is still not trustworthy and should not be considered over any competition.

The only thing Chrysler is guilty of is making a ****ty minivan with a K car transmission. Anyone who owned a caravan/voyager/ T & C before the 93 model year replaced a transmission before 100k sometimes at 60 or 70k (just after the warranty wore off).
The current interiors in the cars are horrid but I think Cerebrus can clean them up

How is GM evil? There might be bad people, but a company is made up of a spectrum of people.

NoName, not arguing for anyone, but I would point out that a company has “corporate culture” that dictates certain ethics of the company. Such corporate culture could be created and forced upon employees by the senior management. So while every company is “made up of a spectrum of people,” it could be deemed “evil” according to its prevailing corporate culture. The infamous Enron comes to mind.

The top people at Enron were crooks (same as at Worldcom), but what about the average worker who had no idea what his company was pulling? Can’t claim they were evil just by working at Enron.
