Saudis say oil could last another 140 years

09/13/2006, 1:10 PM

By admin

The world has used up only 18 percent of the total supply of crude oil, said Abdallah S. Jum’ah of state-owned Aramco. At the current level of consumption, the Earth’s supplies should last another 140 years, Jum’ah said. But experts point out if consumption increases incrementally, the supply would only be enough to last until roughly 2070.

So if Hybrid cars are the way of the future, wouldnt the consumption levels lower or atleast not be plotted the same if the reports were done on current fuel usuage/car types?

I’d be interested to see what the ratio of fuel used today in passenger vehicles versus other (airplanes, farming eqpt, etc) and how will be in 50 years? There isn’t a great deal of evolution in the aerospace industry that is going to get these guys off of Jet-A anytime soon. What does that do to consumption levels and is there much of a move by the Boeing’s of the world to find alternative fuel sources for their people movers as well?

Damn those mullahs for being born on our oil! :P

China’s auto market is growing fast (and it’s not like ours or anyone’s current auto use is declining), so any benefit of increased efficiency from hybrids is insignificant.

I haven’t conducted a study on the amount of oil remaining in Saudi Arabia myself, but I doubt the Saudi’s are the last people to provide credible analysis.

The last thing the Saudi’s want is a world free of oil depandacy. Wouldn’t it be in their best interest to convince us all that there is plenty of oil so we continue to burn it up in the same wasteful fasion we do now? Why would they say anything that would encourage us to develop oil free energy?

I don’t care if there are 1000 years of oil left, I don’t care if global warming is nothing more than a left wing conspiracy, I don’t care if gas costs 79 cents a gallon. We should be looking for a way to free ourselves from oil.

Do you want to send your hard earned dollars to the middle east? I don’t. Would you want to breath off the tailpipe of a PZEV engine? I don’t. I’m you don’t either. Why do we then?

c’mon, joint the no-blood-for-oil circle jerk! we promise it’ll make you feel good about being morally superor! :-)

There are a number of technological advancements made in ANY industry that would easily push that number back a few hundred to a few thousand years. I am talking metalurgy, carbon composits, plastics, etc that affect not only the parts of an Automobille but the bottle of the shampoo you used this morning, the materials in residential and comercial buildings, the telephone you use, ANY AND EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE. Automobilles only use ~15-30% of oil, the rest goes to other industries. Advancements in alternative energy sources (including regulatory changes; ie. nuclear power and new oil refineries and processing) and advanced materials technology are what are truly going to impact global natural resource supply.

Saudi Arabia’s reserve figures are a state secret. Jum’ah’s just saying relax and don’t bother to spend money on alternatives. Instead what he’s really saying is “buy my product, we’ve got lots of it.” Which translates into “give me your money.”

One reason we need to get off oil, aside from environmental issues, is that it would be a key to national security. Instead of spending billions of dollars to invade and occupy Iraq, we could have spent that money on an infrastructure that supports alternative energy for our energy needs. This would have been the smartest and most effective way to stick it up Bin Laden and the Saudi’s @ss.

I guess we invaded Iraq to secure ourselves oil for the next few decades to follow? I hope so anyways, because so far it’s been a monumental waste, as I think most of us suspected in the first place.

Yea, Democracy and general safety of free peoples from the islamic fascists is a total waste of time.

I do not trust the oil reserve forcast in any case.

I am far from being a tree hugger, but I am all for limiting our dependance on middle east oil. Alternative fuels are good pursuits. We should also pad our bets by harvesting the petroleum reserves we have in this country (US) though.

Unnecessary, because I’d hate to be the one to tell the mother/father that their son was killed in a country that’s not even our own. Unnecessary, because no matter what we do, Muslims will keep blowing themselves up, will keep fighting a stupid jihad etc. etc. etc. I say nuke ‘em all, but I’m not about to start that debate again, so I’ll leave it at that.

Let’s develop cheap alternative sources and make the oil last 1,400 years. That way the OPEC and other oil A-holes get a lot less money and pay the price for the assraping they have been doing.

First, the Democrats would have gotten him to tell the world there is only 50 years left to raise prices. So, I’m sure they weren’t involved. Second, the Republicans would have had him say there’s an unlimited supply, so I’m sure they’re not involved.

Our need to become independent of natural resources and non-renewable energy is a good sustaining policy – economically, politically and environmentally.

Jihadist care little about oil and most things. If they care about anything, I guess you could say foreign policy, but really, it’s just an extreme ideology (like polygamy or televangelism). Whether we suck all the oil dry in the region or use none of it, there will be no change in radical ideology. In fact, we could probably use a good disruption in oil supply from the region. If we want to become independent, that’d be a GREAT incentive.

The one area where low oil consumption helps is to take away money sources from governments who can then use the money to buy votes – creating virutal dictatorships that cannot be broken even by elections. As long as money flows in, no one really cares that much (Argentina in the 1950’s, Eva Peron, Andrew Lloyd Weber?)

I’m sorry to point this out, but only about 10,000 Iraqi bodies have been found in mass graves – about a quarter the number that have died in fighting since we occupied, and there were no WMD’s in Iraq nor connections to al-Qaeda.

If we really want to lower our consumption of oil, period, just have the government tax it like they do in Europe. With clean diesel, we could maintain PZEV emission levels in most cars and get 30% better gas mileage without hybrid technology.

More Mass Graves in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq, April 14 – Investigators have discovered several mass graves in southern Iraq that are believed to contain the bodies of people killed by Saddam Hussein’s government, including one estimated to hold 5,000 bodies, Iraqi officials say.

The graves, discovered over the past three months, have not yet been dug up because of the risks posed by the continuing insurgency and the lack of qualified forensic workers, said Bakhtiar Amin, Iraq’s interim human rights minister. But initial excavations have substantiated the accounts of witnesses to a number of massacres. If the estimated body counts prove correct, the new graves would be among the largest in the grim tally of mass killings that have gradually come to light since the fall of Mr. Hussein’s government two years ago. At least 290 grave sites containing the remains of some 300,000 people have been found since the American invasion two years ago, Iraqi officials say.

Forensic evidence from some graves will feature prominently in the trials of Mr. Hussein and the leaders of his government. The trials are to start this spring.

One of the graves, near Basra, in the south, appears to contain about 5,000 bodies of Iraqi soldiers who joined a failed uprising against Mr. Hussein’s government after the 1991 Persian Gulf war. Another, near Samawa, is believed to contain the bodies of 2,000 members of the Kurdish clad led by Massoud Barzani.

As many as 8,000 men and boys from the clan disappeared in 1983 after being rounded up in northern Iraq by security forces at the command of Ali Hassan al-Majid, widely known as Chemical Ali. It remains unclear, however, how the victims ended up in the south.

Investigators have also discovered the remains of 58 Kuwaitis spread across several sites, including what appears to be a family of two adults and five children who were crushed by a tank, Mr. Amin said. At least 605 Kuwaitis disappeared at the time of the first gulf war, and before the latest graves were discovered, fewer than 200 had been accounted for, he added.
