Toyota and Subaru’s jointly-developed new coupe has yet to arrive at U.S. dealers under the Scion FR-S nameplate, but already Toyota’s North American youth-oriented brand has created a special race car that will see action both in the quickly growing sport of drifting in the Formula Drift pro series.
The new car is aptly named the Scion Racing/GReddy FR-S race car, boasting a serious 600 horsepower at the request of pro-drifter Ken Gushi for the 2012 Formula Drift pro drifting series in the U.S.
This unique race car was built with crews from both Scion Racing and GReddy, with the intention of joining a quickly growing field of factory-sponsored race cars in the pro drifting circuit in the U.S.
To help get the word out about the street-going FR-S, Scion is also launching a program called “First 86,” in which they will select 86 lucky owners of the upcoming FR-S to take delivery of their cars before they officially go on-sale to the public. Those looking to take advantage of the special offer will have just eight hours and six minutes to submit a request at the official site.
While at Detroit, Scion also took the opportunity to announce that the FR-S will be the first car to offer a connected infotainment audio system called BeSpoke, powered by Pioneer’s Zypr.
“Beginning last year, all Scion models come standard with Bluetooth Hands-Free and HD Radio Technology,” said Jack Hollis, vice president Scion. “Scion’s new BeSpoke system will take in-car technology to the next level, offering owners the ability to be more connected.”
