Toyota’s original $20,000 price point for its new 86 sports coupe appears to be totally blown. After announcing higher-than-expected pricing for the Japanese market, Toyota has confirmed that the European version of the car will arrive with an even steeper price tag.

Last month Toyota priced the 86 for the Japanese market from 1.99 million yen, or the equivalent of 19,900 euros. However, that pricing is for a de-contented version of the 86 that won’t be sold in Europe. European buyers will only have access to higher-content versions of the 86 with prices starting “around 30,000 euros”.

“In Japan they will be launching with a low-spec version as an entry point. We’re launching with a relatively high-grade model with 17-inch wheels and a high range of equipment,” a Toyota spokesman told Automotive News.

If that pricing holds true for the U.S. market, that means the 86, which will be sold as the Scion FR-S on these shores, would list from $39,285. Although it’s hard to judge pricing from one market to the next, the 86′s 30,000 euro price tag at least suggests the car will be priced somewhere in the $25,000 range.

The Scion FR-S is slated to launch during the spring, so look for official pricing to be announced within the next few weeks.
