Scion reveals Hako Coupe Concept in NYC

ScionToyota’s youth brand — took the wraps off of its latest concept Wednesday at the New York Auto Show. Dubbed the Hako Coupe, the concept was designed by Scion’s Tokyo Design Division and is intended to reflect “youth-inspired trends.”

The Hako Coupe’s shape is unmistakably Scion, but its unusual design will no doubt have a polarizing effect. According to Jack Hollis, Scion vice president, the Hako Concept’s look is supposed to be that of a “sporty version of a box.” Maybe Hollis confused ugly with sporty.

The front of the car is highlighted — if you can call it that — by LED headlights, a large upper grille and smaller lower grille. In profile, the Hako Coupe has shape similar to that of an armored truck.

Outback, the concept features LED taillights and backup lights integrated into the car’s exhaust. The Hako Coupe’s roof is comprised of a barcode pattern, but Scion execs say one day you might be able to chose the roof’s display — from messages to images.

Inside, the Hako Concept has a design theme inspired by gaming, and uses many rubber materials for easy cleaning. LCD monitors are integrated into the concept’s front head rests.

A Bluetooth connection allows music or video files to be uploaded to the Scion’s entertainment system, which is comprised of two video monitors on the dash, with a centrally-mounted roller-ball acting as the interface. There are more screens on each doors and in the rear side walls displaying images from a-pillar mounted cameras that point outside.

Scion remains open-minded about building or redesigning the Hako. “We’ll listen to the feedback from this concept to help us determine how our brand could evolve and grow over the next five years,” said Hollis.

There have been rumors that the Hako Coupe could replace the Scion xA, but we hope they stay just as that — rumors.

Have they actually gotten the feedback of any young people. I’ll take the liberty of calling myself young, and I’ll also take the liberty to say that neither me nor anyone I know thinks that design is the least bit appealing. When that boxy Honda Element first came out, I thought auto design couldn’t go lower. Well, it just did, with a windshield perpendicular to the road, sure to improve aerodynamics and gas mileage.

YIKES! If this is any indication of the future design direction for the Scion brand, I fully expect them to continue their journey spiraling down the drain.

The tC is the only Scion product that I see out on the road on a regular basis. It’s also the only Scion product that I see piloted by members of Scion’s desired youth demographic. It seems to me as though Scion would get a clue and design more products based on the tC’s desirable traits. The tC is reasonably priced, offers some utility (hatchback configuration), and is sort of sporty-looking (for a Toyota product). Maybe they should offer more sporty-looking variants on the tC’s platform to complement the one winner Scion has in its portfolio. A sporty compact sedan (or 5-door that looks like a sporty sedan), crossover, and SUT built on the tC/Avensis platform might help Scion regain its momentum in the market. Another modified box on wheels is not the answer.

Too far to one side of the line towards just weird.!

The Windshield kills the whole deal. Fix it. Give it some slope or curvature to match the rest of the machine and I think it’ll work.

Otherwise, this is a decent concept, but still a lousy idea.

I also second the comment about it having street rod cues. I actually like the front, I think that’s pretty neat but, how is this a coupe? Do they plan on basing it on a sedan model? And even so, it’s more of a station wagon/compact wagon/box than anything else, not much of a coupe if you ask me.

I don’t think the design is all that great, not because of the odd angles but nothing seems to go together well. Retro front, but the rest of the design is a box. And the interior I understand is supposed to be simple, but the rear seats look very uncomfortable, and even more worrying is that bit of metal sticking out each side of the seat. It just looks very cheap.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of Scions designs and I love the tC, but is it just me or does it seem Toyota’s striving to create new categories from thin air? First the Venza, whatever they labeled that (a crossover sedan, something silly like that), then their recent truck concept, and now this.

This? No.
Never.
I liked to one concept they showed a year ago… a lot better than this. It had some promise.
This?
I honestly hope they aren’t serious. tC is on 4th year right now. The xB and xA were replaced at around the end of the 4th model year.
They might seriously use this thing.

I hope not, or I will have to wait and see how the Astra 3 door does, long term, over the next year(it costs more, but if it holds up well, would be worth it, vs this horrible looking travesty of a pathetic joke).

No wonder Toyota/Scion sales ae down nearly 2% vs 07.

This is just stupid.

It’s Smaller(in overall length) than the xD!

I’ve been reading for a long time and never commented, but now I MUST say that this thing is hideous. I represent Scion’s prime market (20-something college student) and mildly liked the xA and xB and really like the tC, but this… it’s horrible! You would have to pay me to drive this thing. I’ve looked at all the pictures to see if I’m missing something, but unless if I still am, this will be the industry’s biggest flop ever. All I can think of is a walrus. And that is no compliment.

If so, this is most likely Scion’s “answer” to it.
The Corolla with tC engine..that’s probably it for “sporty fwd Toyota-Scion”(why?).
The tC is nice. When it’s done…guess if we want 3 doors/fwd… under 20K msrp….there’s the Astra(or wait for the next generation, should be here when I am ready to buy).

I actually kind of like it. Yes, the upright windshield is a bit odd in today’s hyper-aerodynamic world, but think how nice it’d be to look through from the inside. And I like the stance, so of like a bulldog in a crouch. I sort of see hints of old-school street rods in it, just as some of you do. I also like the ridge that goes around the edge of the roof; I don’t know how practical it’d be for production, or to live with, but I think it looks kind of cool.

By the way—for all you young’uns who think that “old” people will never like new ideas, I’m 52.

I feel the entire car design world has been heading in that direction since the BMW 7 series debuted. Design something so awful it’s controversial enough to need to be copied, and eventually everybody gets used to it and convinces themselves they like it. This isn’t the way car design should be.

Ah well, I can’t say I expect much from Toyota. They make the ugliest cars in the industry.

I like it alot. It’s got some real potential. About the greenhouse…remember the Dodge Hemi concept which hinted at the direction that became the Magnum/Charger? The concept had a 50’s-style windshield, but the production cars were more mainstream. With a traditional layout, this thing would be pretty bitchin’. Even as it is today, though, I’d still straight-up take it over the current Xb, which I feel has virtually no appeal at all and is a very embarrassing replacement for the cool little Xb it replaced. With the current Xb, Scion messed with the winning formula-no wonder their sales are slipping.

The only one still worth buying is the tC, the only Scion car that hasn’t been updated yet. At the rate they’re going, Scion will be shut down by 2011 due to a lack of sales.
