I'm RS # 628. I tried to talk my wife into 2100, but she wanted something bigger (hence, the minivan). I wouldn't have wanted the other limited editions. Their features weren't that enticing. But the 3 series is spectacular. How do you like your 3 series? I had a blast in Canada--lots of folks came up to talk about the car and ask what it was. I convinced one lady that it was a Hummer (well she asked if it was and I couldn't resist). I told her that it was a one of a kind Hummer concept car that would be coming out in 2008 as the latest model in the Hummer line-up. Hi ho.

I purchased a Scion sB release version 3.0 in glorius bug belly green. I'm extremly glad that I did for its features are terrific. The special features that came with version 3 make those of other special editions of the xB pale by comparison. The post before mine mentions the dvd screens in the headrests, but I must also add that the stereo kit with XM radio is excellent. This is the car for parents with young kids (the wireless headphones are cool as is the dual zone sound system). I liked mine so much and I almost bought one for my wife (she opted for a mini-van as she's not hypercool like me ;-}. Now, I'd like a diesel pickup version of the xB with catiplller treads in purple. I've heard rumours that the redesign of the xB is going to make it wider, longer, and more powerful. I hope that it retains its charm and its decent gas mileage. I averaged 30 mpg on a 4,000 mile trip this summer with much travel at 75 to 80 miles per hour and a good bit of urban driving as well. BTW, a moon roof would be a nice option as well as factory installed cruise control. Noting drives as well as a box!

the tC has less aftermarket support because its a US only model.

The whole point of Scion is to build a that car you want! if you have driven an xB im sure you would be surprised at its power. I love when someone who has never even been in the car says it has “anemic power” and handles crappy. Put the Motor Trend down and go take a test drive. We don’t need more sheep we need EDUCATED opinions. after the basic bolt ons and some suspension parts its a blast to drive, especially in the turns! go look on www.scionlife.com, everyone who owns one loves it. no one cares what other ppl think, in fact us xB owners trade insults, its funny to us. Almost a badge of honor. Know that if you insult the car the owner is actually happy about it

there are plenty of s/c and turbo set ups out there for less then 3000 that will put ~145hp down to the wheels. There is one kit in development that puts 180 down

I am sorry also for referring to you in a less than civil manner, global_lightning. Stating that my position was still relevant would have sufficed without going to that length.

I'm aware of the aftermarket support for the xA and xB (and amazingly there is LESS for the tC, their 3300lb halo car) but even with aftermarket support for suspensions, this still leaves the anemic power and the expectation on the part of owners to want to turbocharge their Scion. I don't know about anyone else but if I lived in California and wanted a serious tuner car, I'd pretty much be SOL save for a handful of random cars. Skirting their emissions tests and visual inspections is becoming harder every year. This is why I wouldn't ever buy the xB as a tuning machine, just a neat economy van. I just laugh bitterly at the entire hobby of hotrodding that I love for how creative you can be with it because if CA's war on engine modification is any indication of the future, it's becoming almost impossible to personalize a car to your own specifications. Toyota should be drowned in letters by its fans and buyers demanding they build some sporty turbo and 8,000rpm NA engines for their cars again.

The Mk2 MR2 Turbo and the 1986-92 and 93-98 Supras were great sportscars. I even like the Mk3 MR2 and everyone knows about the hype surrounding the AE86/GT-S 80's Corrolas.

Toyota sells no sportscars at all and beyond that there is a whole market for under 20k subcompact rear drive sporty cars that NO manufacturer is catering to right now. The Subie WRX is the only thing that comes close in spirit but it's well past 20k.

Hyperion, I agree with you. The MR2 mk2 (1991 - 1996) and the last Supras were capable of some serious HP. Factory equiped with turbos... One big regret I have was passing up a new MR2 turbo when I had the chance (insurance cost was a B@tch)

Now for the xB, TRD sells suspension parts and there is moderate aftermarket support for forced induction. With a little tweaking, this box could make a nice sleeper.

And since were admitting our faults, sorry about that math comment (civility on LLN? WTF? will this get us banned?)

I admit it makes a much better sexmobile than any 2+2 I've ever driven :)

I got a little hot-headed, I admit. It's just irksome that in favor of profitable show-n-no-go fad cars (which by itself is perfectly OK), Toyota completely abandons some markets that may fluctuate but never really go away.

I think people hate on this way too seriously....think of the sex you could have in one of those things!

Seriously though, it's raison d'etre is to be ultra-cheap and funky urban transport, for the type of ppl who are more into life than they are into hot cars.

so back up and chill out.

Were you born a rectum or did you work extra hard in junior high to become one?

I've made my point and I don't feel one year of age difference is enough to invalidate me. If the best retort you can make amounts to kiddie insults I am thoroughly amused. You've given me a good chuckle tonight at your expense.

The world is not *always* governed by such absolutes or have not figured that out in your college courses yet?

Hyperion:
If the target market is 18 to 24, and you're 25, then you are *not* in the target market. Reference any 2nd grade mathbook, the chapter on "greater than and less than, or which way does the alligator's mouth open?"

global_lightning, I'm supposedly in the target market for this vehicle: 18-24. I'm 25. Hardly retirement age although if the founders of Google are any beginning of a trend this may change *sarcasm* Sure, I can afford the xB. I just don't care. I am not impressed. I am not interested. While I do need transportation and can only afford to own one vehicle I also know what I am looking for in a car: four seats, over 200 horsepower, standard transmission, rear or all wheel drive, under 3200lbs, excellent handling, have acceptable gas mileage (ie: 25mpg).... and it must look good to me. Add to that I've wanted a turbocharged car for a long time and that factors in quite strongly with me.

I think my opinion carries *some* validity, GL. They want people MY AGE to buy their cars (or get mom and dad to cosign for it or blow credit on it) and I am expression my negative opinion of their "hot" item that I supposedly should jump for joy over. As I said before... it's a good van and it's a Toyota. I'd buy it used in a few years with 100k on the odometer as a POS commuter. That's what I think of it.

I would not spend what little money I have on this car or any special limited edition. I think it sucks and I could care less if Toyota is making money hand over fist with it. In the end, my current car that I already own can outpower it, outhandle it, haul quite a bit of stuff, get decent gas mileage AND out-"fun" it while driving.

If you think none of these things matter to young people just because most of them have little or no purchasing power (ie: enough money to demand "this" over "that" feature or type of engine in a new vehicle) then you're the one who's getting long in the tooth.

Ever hear of the used car market, a shop manual and some tools? Until I can afford better, brand new that's what I do.

And as a result, Toyota doesn't get my business: They do not offer anything that I want that I can afford. And I won't buy anything I don't really want to live with.

global_lightning, I’m supposedly in the target market for this vehicle: 18-24. I’m 25. Hardly retirement age although if the founders of Google are any beginning of a trend this may change *sarcasm* Sure, I can afford the xB. I just don’t care. I am not impressed. I am not interested. While I do need transportation and can only afford to own one vehicle I also know what I am looking for in a car: four seats, over 200 horsepower, standard transmission, rear or all wheel drive, under 3200lbs, excellent handling, have acceptable gas mileage (ie: 25mpg)…. and it must look good to me. Add to that I’ve wanted a turbocharged car for a long time and that factors in quite strongly with me.

"Toyota doesn't get it"? That obviously explains why they have hundreds of these gathering dust on dealer lots, despite huge rebates and incentives. Why should Toyota offer a 4th special edition xB after the first three were such failures?
/sarcasm

I wonder if all of you bagging on this are closer to retirement date than your graduation date???

Gogogodzilla, I completely agree with you. I actually like the xB as a cheap van, but as a vehicle to oogle over and pay extra for? No way. Plus, what's the point of DIY hotrodding a commuter vehicle when you have smog testing? Toyota doesn't get it.

So... how does a paint job and different grille make the xB go fast?

Just another steaming pile of 'Pimp my Ride' cr@p.

(Had Scion added a turbocharger, intercooler, and sport suspension... then I'd have been interested)

This is an interesting paint job, I'd really like to see it in person, but I think it'd overall be pretty eye catching and cool, and i like the tail lights on this one.

my car has an alpine headeck, alpine speakers, 2 lcd monitors in the head rests. a special grill. spoiler and various other things. the price tag was ~17200. not bad if you ask me. i think everyone would be really surpsied if they went for a test drive and did some reseach onto the xB. i dont think spacious reallly explain the interior well enough. there is more rear leg and head room then in a BMW 7

From what I've heard, the Scions get really pricey once you start adding on the cool custom options though...

There goes the economic advantage...which means that it will sell by just its looks?

Great. A snazzy paint job on a box. Sorry folks, but this this has always looked like "the box the real car came in" to me. I wouldn't be caught dead in one, no matter how "cool" it might be to drive. There are other cars that drive well too, that aren't boxes.

I think I'm showing my age.

Will there even be a 2007 Scion xA or xB, or are they phasing them out with the last of the 2006s? October 2006 seems to be a bit late in introducing a new 2006 model.. though Porsche has done the same thing with the Cayenne Titanium Edition (because they are not producing any 2007 model Cayennes).

Subjectivity of it's apperance aside, what else can you get that has the same quality, utility, fuel economy, and top dollar resale value for 14k? Accept it for what it is rather that criticize it for what it is not.

The 'Toaster' is economical and has some utility. It is not performance oriented in any way shape or form.
You would cut your wrists after 30 minutes behind the wheel if it had the auto tranny, and you gotta row the stick like a mad man to make any time as well.
I dont mind the looks too much, but driving it really killed it for me. Too bad my wife really wants one for the kid taxi/grocery hauler. On the plus side it does get 30mpg.

I kinda dig on scion, I wish they'd produce a car I want.

xA - too small. Funny shape eventually settled into "no" catagory for me.

xB - Funny shape eventually became "yes" on this one, but it looks too tall to be fun to drive

tC - looks nice, but I want the practicality of a sedan.

Scion seems poised to make a mazda-3-but-cheaper-and-more-attractive that would be hard to resist buying.
