Toyota ’s Scion division has long advocated a simple lineup of just three vehicles, but a desire to increase sales could push the range to six models. As previously reported, Scion’s sales have been declining, so company executives see adding models as the best way to recover.
Scion doesn’t want to push its existing three vehicles “too hard,” said vice president Jack Hollis. Instead, several new models are under consideration.
The Hako — unveiled last week at the New York Auto Show — is marketed as a coupe, but it will be sold as a new model if produced, rather than a replacement to the tC, Hollis told Automotive News. The tC is expected to be replaced by a boxier model, but it will look more like the Fuse concept than the Hako. Previous rumors incorrectly suggested the NYC concept would preview the next tC.
As reported in June, Scion is also rumored to be considering a pickup truck model, perhaps along the lines of the Pontiac G8 pickup. Hollis confirmed the idea was under consideration, saying his company is “not limiting” its search.”
An SUV, a hybrid, and a subcompact roadster are other possibilities.
