In-car cell phone use has been a hot topic as of late – including a recent call by the Transportation Safety Board to completely ban the use of cell phones behind the wheel – prompting electronics maker Scosche to develop an innovative technology for the problem at hand.

Studies have shown that distracted driving can be just as dangerous as driving drunk, but Scosche’s new technology – dubbed cellCONTROL – eliminates distractions before they can occur by blocking all cell phone functions while a car is in motion.

CellCONTROL consists of two main components – a downloadable smart phone app and a “trigger” that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD-II interface. After a on-time setup the system automatically blocks calls, email, texting, internet, camera and other apps via a Bluetooth signal anytime the car is in motion (as detected by the unit plugged into the OBD-II interface). The system does, however, allow for the uses of a handsfree headset.

Scosche has also safeguarded the system against disgruntled users. If the OBD-II unit in unplugged, the system automatically sends a text message and email to a designated administrator.

As cellCONTROL relies on an OBD-II interface, it is only compatible with vehicles produced from 1996 on. Cell phone compatibility shouldn’t be an issue, though, as cellCONTROL works with over 1,200 cell phones.

CellCONTROL is available for purchase now with a price tag of $129.95.
