SEAT, the Spanish subsidiary of Volkswagen, has taken the wraps off of its all-new Ibiza five-door supermini. The new Ibiza is based on the 3-door Bocanegra concept car that graced SEAT’s stage at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
The new model is larger than the current model — both inside and out — and is now the largest car in its class. The new Ibiza will offer a long list of features, including Hill Hold Assist, front fog lights with side illumination (cornering) function and combined AUX-IN/USB connectivity for MP3 players.
Underhood, the Ibiza can be had with a choice of three gasoline engines: a 1.2-liter three-cylinder with 70 PS, a 1.4-liter 85 PS four-cylinder or the sports-oriented 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 102 PS. Those engines can either be had with a standard five-speed manual transmission or VW’s seven-speed DSG gearbox.
A range of diesel engines is expected to join the lineup shortly.
The new Ibiza also represents the new corporate face that will soon spread throughout the SEAT lineup.

Lose the wacky sculpted surfaces … or at least do them properly.

I think it’s inspired, the use of 2 very different side creases creates a unique aggressive look for both the front and back. It’s like they designed a sporty looking back and a sporty looking front and decided instead of compromising and dumbing down one of them, they just stuck em both on; seems like both halves are doing battle to see who reigns supreme as the more aggressive side of the car. If I had to label the design language I’d call it “Sport Infinity,” because as you follow the side line from either the front or back, it brings your eyes to the opposite line and makes you appreciate the entire look.

It’s “inspired” by every other economy five-door out there. It’s an ‘08 Impreza with creases. Nothing more. The current trend of random body side creases is a design copout, for the most part slapped on as an after thought.

Awesome styling, the creases are done properly by the way, only the design illiterati can’t see that.

All the creases in the front end remind me of the Toyota FT-HS concept.

No, ‘CaCaLover’, they are NOT done properly, fool … even ‘Vroom’ acknowledges this as a failure … kinda like you. This car looks good, to a female, maybe.

Implosive chill you’ll have a heart attack.
The creases in the side are a development of the creases in the side of the Leon and ALtea and not a copy of the Mazda 2s’ creases

Will it fall apart in the first six months of ownership like its Volkswagen siblings?

SEAT could do better in English-speaking countries by changing its name to “SEYAT.” That way its name looks more like a yacht and less like a seat. And it still sounds the same in Spanish.

SAET started life as FIAT then was sold to VW and now there is rumor of being sold again. They don’t sell that many cars even in Spain.

‘CaCaLover’, trust me when I state that you would be the last reason on earth that would cause me a heart attack. You’re lower on the list of causes than the African dung beetle.
