Rumors circulating around the European auto industry claim that Volkswagen-owned SEAT is busily developing a sporty three-door hatchback variant of the recently-unveiled third-generation Leon.

Aimed squarely at well-established competitors like the Opel Astra and the Renault Mégane, the three-door Leon will be heavily inspired by the IBe concept that made its global debut in Paris two years ago. If the rumors are to be believed, the hatchback will make its global debut at about this time next year and it might wear the Leon Sport Coupe moniker.

In order to be deemed worthy of the Sport Coupe name, the three-door Leon will feature a sportier and sleeker body than that of the family-oriented five-door model. It will also boast a shorter wheelbase, a lowered suspension and upgraded brakes.

It is too early to say what will lie under the Leon Sport Coupe's hood. However, expect SEAT to launch a range-topping model that will fight head-to-head against the 265-horsepower Renault Mégane R.S. and the 280-horsepower Opel Astra OPC.

More details about the three-door Leon will be available at the Paris Motor Show next September.

The three-door hatchback will not be the last variation of the new Leon. The addition of a station wagon model is a likely possibility, and the platform will spawn a crossover that will borrow design cues from the IBX concept that SEAT displayed at the 2011 edition of the Geneva Motor Show.
