Second look: Ferrari P 4/5 by Pininfarina

Pininfarina has released some new images of the custom Ferrari P 4/5 it created for car collector James Glickenhaus. Valued at over $3 million, the vehicle was inspired by the P4 racer of the 1960s. Essentially, the P4/5 is a rebodied Ferrari Enzo, with a Pininfarina-designed and engineered exterior. Among the new images are photos of the development process. See the new gallery after the jump…

If you look at the photo of the car in the wind tunnel with the smoke you will understand why we put the exhaust there. Like on modern F1 cars they help with aerodynamics by filling in the air flow. The areo on this car allows it to reach very high speeds and helps make it the fastest Street legal Ferrari ever built.

I personally love the entire package: the final product, and even more so the story and inspiration behind it. RE the hotly debated exhausts (as far as I can see, if this is the major hang up for people you’re doing pretty damn well design wise), the only thing I wonder is how they sound :) Any chance of the good folks at Top Gear getting some passing shots of it for next season’s series while you’re in Europe? I hope you’re planning on trotting it around the world so everyone will get a chance to see it. I do agree that it is a nice overall design from Pininfarina except for mentioned out of place exhaust stacks. I must agree that they should have copied the smooth exhausts with heat resistant coating on the body of the Ferrari F1 cars that actually helps provide downforce for the car. Another thing is that while you have spent so much and draped an all new body from a basic Enzo, why not go a bit further and commission an all new interior to boot. The interior still looks too much like the Enzo. Individuality and uniqueness really counts in this price range RIGHT? I still think money is better spent by getting Pininfarina to build a road legal Maserati Birdcage concept because I still think that it is way better looking than the Enzo, FXX, MC12 and this car.

Hi and Thanks for all of your comments.

The exhaust is ceramic coated. We really tried to make this a fully usable/drivable car and when I first drove her I was really delighted. She’s stable, and the extra tire size really keeps her planted as does the more balanced air flow and higher downforce.

Due to the lower weight and better aerodynamics we’re
looking at 1-100Kph in Very close to 3 seconds and a top speed of 240mph+

Top Gear has seen the car and we will have press at our high speed testing in September. (Interested Press should contact Pininfarina)

My ancestors were from Minsk. The ways of Ellis island are mysterious to all.

The exhaust system works this way. At low rpm the exhaust comes out the bottom into the diffusers. It’s quiet for in town and won’t cook pedestrians who get to close. At 3000 rpm the exhaust shunts to the top pipes and when that happens a noise that you will not soon forget come out.

Thanks for the comments and critique.

My advise to those seeking the fastest sports racing car existent would be to talk to Dr. Martin Winterkorn. The Audi R 10 is the one that leaves all others far, far, behind as it’s predecessor the Audi R8 did for many, many years.

P 4/5 is not a race car. It is a steet legal homage to the great sports racing Ferrari’s of days gone by and the passion of the the people who built and raced those cars.

take a look at the pics, the center mounted brake light is housed in the rear lip above the license plate. Also, as on most modern Ferrari’s, the door handle is in fact hidden in the side door duct. The fact that this car wears a NY license plate means that it is in fact registered. In order to be registered, i would imagine the front windscreen meets all US DOT requirements. Remember, this is based on an Enzo, so it probably wasnt a far stretch to get safety approvals.

It is truly wonderful that you are developing technology that not only will make your race cars winners but that those discoveries will wind up in your production cars.

It is also great that you are at the fore front of diesel technology. As my son has taught me we must begin to use energy more efficiently and energy that can be derived to some extent from bio mass so that we don’t continue to add endless carbon to our atmosphere.

That’s one reason, in my small way, I used the Engelhard catalytic technology in P 4/5. Le Mans winners and Pininfarina designed one off Ferrari’s capture the world imagination and must try to show people that things like your TDI diesels and liquid coolant catalyst can make a difference and are the way we must go in the future. Racing does improve the breed and everyone who drives a car from a company that tests itself at Le Mans drives a better car. Perhaps we will meet during the press days of the Paris Auto show as I’d love to show you all the things we’ve done first hand. Keep building great cars!

As for the FXX we know that it isn’t a road car but it is based on the Enzo so I think it will need few modifications to pass homologation for a road car. It is definitely easier process than draping an all new body to an existing platform The question in the end is still how much money are you willing to spend on a car and how much money you can use to persuade Ferrari to do a personalized car.

The cost to produce a new street legal platform and there is NO way that the FXX engine and chassis could be made street legal we looked into it, is 40 to 50 Million US dollars. That is why one of one’s will probably have to use existing legal chassis and engines if one wants them to be street legal like

Beautiful car. That’s how it (Enzo) should have looked in the first place. The Enzo is mean looking for sure, but what has happened to Pinninfarina? They used to design sleek, sexy cars but the Enzo is too angular, especially after a beauty like the F-50. My question to Mr. Jim Glickenhaus is if the original P4 was designed by Pinninfarina or Scaglietti, as the latter coachwork builder made the most beautiful Ferrari’s of all time, 250 GTO, 250 LM, 59 TR, etc…

This is a very interesting design study. It is far more impressive in performance for me than appearance though. The front and 3/4 views are nice enough but don’t break a lot of new ground. The rear view disappoints though. But, as they say, ‘form follows function’ and with that in mind here, the sum is indeed greater than it’s parts.
Some inspiration may be taken from this car to coming Ferrari’s though as Ferrari could use a little forward thinking in the area of style these days. (An exception might be the new Superamerica which is a stunning car in both performance and style.)

Hi

Form does follow function and I believe that design that enables a car to function while not always classically beautiful will always stand the test of time. It’s much as The Bard said:

“Something wicked this way comes…”

In addition to paying Homage to the P 3/4/512s/312P/
and 333sp if you look closely at the head light V of LED’s of P 4/5 you’ll see a Homage to the car that recently won Le Mans The Audi R10. Designers often do things like this. The new Ford GT pays homage to the P4 with a similar crease at the top of the fender line which of course was not on the original MKI. When Jason and I saw the R 10 still unpainted in black we both were blown away and wanted to tip our hats to it as we both felt it was definitely going to stand tall at Le Mans.

Strats… When I was 12 (1962) I took my summer job earnings and went to Mannys Music Store and laid down $85. for a Sun Burst Strat with 3 Humbuckers which of course I still have and play. 44 years of Rock and Roll have left a nick or two but when I plug her in and crank the know to 11 she still sings.

When ever I drive any car I always find things I’d like to change. Mainly the things I’d change are things that I think would make a car more usable.
As wonderful as a Lamborghini Murcielago looks and drives I think a usable glove box would make it something my wife would agree to ride with me in more often.

Modern cars from Ferrari are great cars and having driven them when a defroster was a cloth. (I put 65K miles on my 275 GTB 6c in the rain and occasionally in the snow I really appreciate how far these cars have come. The 599 is a great front engined GT car that you can use every day. The F 430 is a tight/toss able/
sports car that will make you smile. Modern Lamborghini’s still make you say WOW and are great drivers as well but all of them left me wanting something a bit different and that is why I commissioned P 4/5. Instead of complaining I wanted to see if what I wanted and dreamed about could be built…

Hey James, is there any chance you would bring your stunning ride to the Hambletonion Parade in Rutherford next year?
