SEMA 2009: Subaru goes gangster with Legacy VIP concept

11/03/2009, 12:00 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Subaru looked to the Japanese underground for inspiration for its latest Legacy VIP concept. The Legacy VIP shown at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas offers a glimpse of the aftermarket potential of the 2010 Legacy as well as a peek into the slow-riding cruiser culture of Japanese gangsters.

The Japanese automaker says that the concept car primarily draws on themes of an East Coast American interpretation of the so-called “bippu” lifestyle of Japan.

The show car features unique Black Plum paint, rolled and flared fenders, a JDM front fascia, folding side mirrors and headlamps, 20 inch MC3 Enterprises Trinidad wheels and a Universal Air air suspension. Inside, it features a number of Subaru dealer accessories, but the real show-stopper is the diamond-stitch Togarashi Red leather trim – which also covers the engine. Subaru tells us that the VIP, or bippu, theme emphasizes silence, so the engine shrouds are designed to keep the vehicle totally quiet for low-speed cruising.

Aside from the shroud, underhood changes to the 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder are limited to some billet accessories from Subaru and an STI flexible strut tower brace.

Funny… I see plenty of cars just like this cruising around town every day.

Except we don’t consider the local dealers and pushers to be “Gangster”.

Pathetic…

Like:
The upholstery is old school, and kind of nifty.
The trunk lid is nice and high.
The speaker boxes are well placed so there’s room for real stuff.

Dislike:
Those rims.
The curtains (WTF?).
The outside color – should have been black.
No window tint – should have been black, too.
The engine cover. Another WTF?

Wonders:
Is that a pair of umbrellas, or a pair of scopes for sniper rifles?

all I want to see is the engine pillows catch fire at 10 km/h

Why do you need a strut tower bar if you aren’t taking any high-speed corners?

is that leather on the engine??? you take it off and put it on the trunk when you are gonna drive the thing right? because… you know… the thing can kind of … you know….burn!

I like it. Including the wheels. I wouldn’t drive it, but I like it.

This is as “bippu” just as the Fast and Furious cars were “typical japanese tuned machines”. NOT!
For once, the stance is all wrong with near perfect rear wheel fitment but very bad front wheel fitment. Just look at that gap between the front wheel and the fender, it’s pathetic considering those are 20 inch rims!

Beatus, what’s with you! Are you exhibitionist or something? If you will buy car like that, you are prone to acquire $100 blowjobs and you do need curtains for modesty.

When you got it, flaunt it. I don’t have a problem being seen.

But I wouldn’t buy a car like that, and I don’t need to pay for blowjobs. Although, you could consider washing the dishes or getting the kids ready for bed as a form of payment…

Wow, that’s some shamelessly tacky crap. Different? Yes; but that certainly doesn’t mean it’s in good taste. It’s like the vehicular equivalent of a big gaudy gold chain necklace and too much cheap cologne.

limited? what about that giant freaking front mount intercooler?

as far as the leather catching on fire… the turbo is in front and under the engine, so I highly doubt anything at the very top of the engine bay is going to get hot enough to set it on fire. I think if they can make welding gloves out of leather, it can handle the top of the engine bay. This is assuming they’re using real leather and they didn’t stitch it with something extremely flammable.

Are those sub woofers designed for silence as well?

Nope. But with the stereo off, this car is “good for sneakin’ up on motherf*****rs.”
