The federal government has pumped nearly $15 billion into Chrysler over the past few months to keep the automaker’s head above water, but Senator John McCain doesn’t expect the Michigan automaker to survive beyond the next few years.
Speaking at a NASCAR event at Phoenix International Raceway, McCain revealed he is dubious of Chrysler’s future, despite a hefty prop from U.S. taxpayers. “It was all about the unions. The unions didn’t want to have their very generous contracts renegotiated so we put $80 billion into both General Motors and Chrysler, and anybody believes that Chrysler is going to survive, I’d like to meet them,” McCain told The Detroit News.
Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year after receiving nearly $15 billion in federal aid.
Although the exact health of Chrysler remains unclear at this point, McCain’s sentiments may not be completely unfounded. Fiat took a 20 percent stake in Chrysler following its emergence from bankruptcy, but doesn’t plan to invest any money into the ailing automaker. Chrysler’s lineup of Fiat-based vehicles is still several years away, leaving the automaker to rely on its current lineup to keep the company afloat in the interim.

Nope, McCain is right. Chrysler is already dead though – that’s where he is wrong. They died once in 1998 under the Daimler takeover. They were revived by Cerebus and killed again this year – now Fiat ran. Fiat will get rid of the Dodge. Chrysler names but keep Jeep and Ram – as they are profitable and fill the dealerships with Fiats Alfas and Lancias until people remember why Fiat failed the first time driving their Spyder that just had it’s cylinder shoot through their hood on the way home from college.
Chrysler is dead though. Dead as a doornail. Again.

I agree with j-dubb. I can see Chrysler being rebadged FIATs at first and then over time FIAT just fading the Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge badges away and just sell them as FIATs in the states. StartIng with the 500. I think Chrysler screwed up their reputation so bad there’s no mending the hole they made. For once I actually agree with McCain as well. Plus I don’t really see FIAT giving two sh*ts about Chryslers fate. They just wanted them to set a foothold in the US market. Once that’s accomplished, they won’t need them anymore.

So I’m the only person with a memory? How does this article jive with the one from last week? On this site!
“Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and Fiat, announced on Wednesday his company intends to repay the $12.5 billion it borrowed from the U.S. federal government and the $3.8-billion lent to it by Canada by 2014.
The claim directly contradicts a U.S. Government Accountability Office report issued this week suggesting America is unlikely to recover its loans to GM and Chrysler.
Marchionne’s timeframe hinges on returning to profitability and boosting sales dramatically. To achieve this, Chrysler is updating three quarters of its lineup by the end of 2010 and the rest by 2012.”
How can you update the lineup without putting money into it?

They have a very, very poor lineup. It’s unfortunate that their quality, reliability and fuel economy (three things looked for in this economy) are very bad. How do they plan to get themselves out of their current situation with their current lineup?
This may sound funny, but as a guy who likes basketball and used to like NY… the Knicks are kicking the bucket right now, but they’ve had a fairly good lineup in recent years (just till now). Just like Chrysler, they promise they’ll be back- with Lebron James and a couple costly players out there. Do I think they’ll do it? It depends if the fans are willing to continue funding their lackluster team (like taxpayers in ChryCo), and allowing them to increase their budget (which is the reason why they’ve traded off a good few players… just as Chrysler has cut their quality to save a few bucks)
