I agree with Amused, I am sure a lot of unsafe metal is off the road, my words.
But at what cost???
There are probably more than a few people who will now have a problem paying the monthly nut on these new vehicle’s.
They will be the next group unable to pay the mortgages and other bills on items they did not deserve to have in the first place, because they blame the banks for giving them the money.

September sales minus C4C will be an eyeopener for some of you.

Did it help these companies going forward, no.
Will they do it again, possibly as long as O and his cronies are around.

I agree with you that the original point was environmental. I am a used car wholesaler that buys trade ins from new car stores, and I have never seen bigger pieces of crap that were traded in. It was amazing that people actually drove some of these heaps. I think one unintended results of C4C is that these people will have nice new cars now and will actually drive MORE. I can honestly say that the majority of the junk that was traded in was that, junk. I wouldn’t want to drive 30 miles in 70 percent of them.

The sales numbers will be out soon enough.

C4C was a band aid, thats all.
It will now be reflected exactly what people are buying with out a carrot from the goverment.
All it did was to get people into showrooms, that may have made there way there during the last quarter.

I love how you define success for C4C – that $3B that the government set aside to spend got spent, ergo it was successful.

I know, I know. They did it to stimulate the economy, get people spending, etc. That thinking is exactly (ironically) how GM got addicted to incentives that partially helped to bankrupt the company. It would be interesting to see how many potential buyers will now sit on the sidelines waiting for a possible C4C, part deux. In other words, C4C effect in reverse.

By your thinking, should the pending fall-off-a-cliff sales for September – December come as a surprise?

On this story… I saw a truck sending a batch of Prius/4Runner and Corollas to a local dealership on the road today and almost threw up at the thought more of these damn things are going to be polluting my eyes on the road.

All Cash For Clunkers did was take sales from the next 6 months and give them all to you in one shot.

Just like any other promotion… the people were going to buy anyways, you just gave them extra incentive to buy NOW. Which hurts future numbers.

DEARBORN, Mich. (Reuters) – Toyota Motor Corp and Ford Motor Co are likely to outsell General Motors Co in the U.S. market by 2015 — when industry sales will finally return to levels last seen in 2000, according to an industry forecasting firm.

Faltering Chrysler Group LLC is also expected to lose market share in a recovering market and by 2015 its U.S. sales will be on par with those of surging Hyundai Motor Co , IHS Global Insight said at a presentation Wednesday.

“The shift in volume from GM and Chrysler to Toyota, Ford, and other manufacturers will be massive,” said George Magliano, an IHS Global Insight analyst.

Also the last three months Ford has consecutively posted higher numbers than last year.

this is bad news… no matter how expected it was.

Early reports suggest Ford will fare the best of the Big Three, slipping only 5 percent. However, Ford had one of biggest sales slides of September 2008 – dropping 36.3 percent – which improves the look of this September’s results.

General Motors, on the other hand, had a relatively decent September last year, slipping only about 16 percent. Because of the modest slide, GM’s September 2009 sales are expected to tumbled 45 percent. Chrysler’s sales are expected to decline by 42 percent.
