GM will be leading Honda and Toyota in the “nexgen” race tbh. They are developing massively diverse propulsion platforms and will simply go with what works best. I don’t think GM will be struggling in the future. I think they’re actually going to pull out far ahead of their competition in the next 6-7 years.

It’s China that everyone should be worried about….

Hydrogen is obviously the fuel of choice for the long run. It’s renewable, clean, cheap, light, and even more powerful than gasoline. As far as engine inefficiency with hydrogen goes…piston engines only create work 13% of the time. A hyrdogen quasiturbine engine would be far more efficient in many aspects than a gasoline piston engine.

If GM & Ford would install Hydrogen and/or Ethanol facilities at each of their dealers, then offer those fuels at cost for one year to each new customer, this could be a game changer! Buy an ethanol/hydrogen vehicle, get a self-service card good for one year fuel at cost. This would be a way for auto companies & us to hurt big oil, who rapes us daily.

Same, Though inefficient, they bring impetus to develop a very robust Hydrogen fuel infrastructure. The fact that most fuel injected IC engines would need around $1500-$2000 is upgrades on existing models (you take your car or truck in a pay that much, while new vehicles would have a far lower price hike unless you’re being taken for a sucker… happens a lot).

But in the short term, Gasoline or ethanol-mix hybid is more likely, Built along side the Volt.

Don’t worry about the hydrogen infrastructure. By 2012 Honda will have most of it in place for the FCX and its successor.

I think the Volt is a more realistic candidate for success, but it’s nice to see this sort of thing making progress. I’m not sold on hydrogen yet, but I’ll keep an eye on it. I hope GM and Honda keep pushing each other.
