Seven 2007 models that matter

Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press has put together an interesting look at seven vehicles that could be a big deal to their respective manufacturers over the coming year. In the case of the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford Edge, and Chrysler Town & Country, they could “be the difference between overtime and layoffs, profit sharing or plant closures a year from now,” Phelan says. Other important vehicles will include the Toyota Tundra, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, and Saturn Outlook (Which Phelan counts as one vehicle).

Because nobody buys today’s cars anymore; we’re all now buying a promise of The Next Big Thing’. When it arrives – like the Mustang: it’s old in 60days ….because there’s another big thing coming. Selling cars have become like selling movies.

The GM vehicles will be a Grand Slam !!!!! The Edge looks good too, while the Tundra looks like it tried a little too hard…I don’t think the F-150, Silverado or Ram have any worries ! :-)

The Tundra has never sold in the numbers that the Domestic rigs pull in. Doubt Toyota is expecting otherwise. It will be successful in the sense that they’ll sell every singe one they make with minimal incentives. They are looking to double their yearly sales and I have no doubt that they’ll make that goal.

For the domestic pick-ups, it’s gonna be a brutal deathmatch between the Big 3 to see who comes out on top. GM/Dodge have the AFM/MDS tech to keep the gasoline consumption low, but their diesel (particularly GM) isn’t as strong as the Ford Powerstroke. OTOH, GM is rumoured to produce an all-new diesel V-8 and Ford will release a new 6.4 L diesel V-8 which should hopefully fix the problems of the old one. I’m on the fence on this one, but one thing’s certain: consumers will win no matter what.

First of all, Toyota Tundra has never outsold any domestic trucks, and it probably never will. The Ford Edge will make a big leap for Ford in the American market if they can manage to sell it in high numbers. The Buick Enclave will only make Buick better, currently it’s in sort of a duesy. The Honda Accord isn’t going to do much for Honda, it’s already the second bestselling sedan in America, of course unless they can beat Camry. The GMC Acadia will help GMC alot. But the Saturn Outlook only waters down Saturns conservative nature, though it may boost sales. I’ve noticed Saturn is turning to a safety concious nature, like Volvo only not a luxury brand.

I’m not sure about the Acadia though, a FWD SUV (or whatever you want to call it – “cross-over”) has even less appeal than a Mini-van IMO.

Until Toyota matches the options list of the domestic trucks, the Tundra will not topple the big 3 pick’em’ups. But each iteration is bringing Toyota closer and closer to that goal and I have no doubt that some iteration of this truck (probably not this gen but maybe the 4th or 5th) will put Toyota within spitting range of the competition. They are learning the market and understand it very well. They’ll get this right if they are patient.

This is already the second generation Tundra & the big 3 are a moving target (at least in the P/U segment). I think it will take Toyota a very long time to (longer than 4 generations) to crack this nut. DCX, Ford, & especially GM are really giving their new vehicles everything they have.

The same question mark arose when the current Tundra came out. People were still so hung up on the T100 poor sales that they were expecting the Tundra to bomb as well. A steady 100k+ sales per year with minimal incentives put that rumor to bed. This next model is looking for 250k buyers this time around and it’ll make that if Toyota did their homework. The focus group was straight out of the truck capital of the states, Texas so the feedback should help them meet their goal. If the trend continues and Toyota DOES double their sales, who knows, maybe Toyota will be looking for half a million takers for the next generation?

To sum it up, I wouldn’t count Toyota out of the sales race forever. And the big 3 would be smart not to ignore it either.

Why aren’t the tree huggers crying foul over the new, larger, gas guzzling Tundra? You can bet your last dollar they would if it was DCX, Ford or GM that was making a bigger pickup. Toyota will not be able to topple the pickup market.

Toyota will not topple the pickup market, but they will compete. Even the mighty F-150 hasn’t “toppled” the market. Everyone has their favorites and competition is good for the consumer. Toyota will be just as big a “player” as the rest of them if they continue to improve with each iteration.

Dismissing them as a future “player” is just ignorant.

I don’t know why you guys are so concerned with the trucks. Maybe it’s the jap vs US thing but the biggest things will be the Accord and Altima as they will really decide the companies’ futures if they flop. Knowing Honda though they’ll try to outdo the Camry really hard this time seeing how disappointing the current generation is. Though a lot of it has to do with the crappy back end.

It’s not the Jap Us thing Veda, it’s just that LOT’S of trucks are sold in America, more than ANYWHERE else in the world I believe. And many of us probably own trucks too (I do, an F-150). The Accord will not decide Hondas future, Accord is already the second best selling sedan in America. The Altima very much will help Nissan, but it probably won’t make or break.

Anyway, what Kenny W said is true. I did some more digging and it appears GM is working hard on an in-house designed, 50-state legal Diesel engine. Read more about it here:

Cars and trucks that no one cares about ? The cross-over (these aren’t SUV’s)segment is the fastest growing of the entire North American industry, so the Edge, Acadia / Enclave / Outlook are not only important to their makers, but to the general market as well. As for the trucks, Americans love ‘em, and they buy them as daily drivers. The new Silverado appears to more than fit the bill, and the Tundra should do O.K. too, but it’ll remain a bit player when compared to F-150 & GM Silverado / Sierra sales. The Ram, while I like it, is being driven by too many Cowboy wannabee’s and young “macho men” that it’s reputation is getting to be like what the Screaming Eagle Trans-Am’s were in the ’80’s, the guy’ that drove the car actually turned it into a joke, in much the same way as Ram driver’s look and act ridiculous with winged spoiler’s and R/T stripes w/Bumble Bee’s…..it’s a comical sight ! :-)

The Tundra will remain a bit player until Toyota figures out the formula of the domestic rigs 110%. The Silverado is completely uninspiring, generic and truthfully a blatant ripoff of an F-series Superduty style-wise. The F will remain the untouchable one since Ford puts serious efforts into their trucks.

I don’t know what part of the country or planet you live in, but the RAM customers I see are no different than your everyday Ford/Toyota/GM owners. Around here though, the Ram and F-series are used on the job site while Nancy, teh glorified 80lb trophy wife drives her husbands “Nancy truck” Gm’er to the nail salon and local Walmart.

Agreed, RAMs and F-*50’s are used as work trucks around here. They’re pretty reliable (especially the RAM) and I’m hoping the new PowerStroke will be an improvement over the 6.0 L.

i work for the highway department. the state all ways buys us dodges or chevys.we have a few powerstrokes all so..no nissan or toyotas……..which i hope they dont!!!
