In an effort to double sales to 200,000 units by 2018, Porsche has set its sights on introducing a new model every year. One sports car planned to supplement the expansion, however, could become a victim of the uncertain global economy before it even hits the pavement.
Porsche has been mulling over an entry-level roadster with four-cylinder power for some time, but now CEO Matthias Mueller has stated that the worldwide economic situation has made the car’s production an “if,” rather than a “when.”
“The financial crisis is real and we need to see how far it develops into an economic crisis develops,” Mueller told the Financial Times Deutschland in an interview published today. “If this happens and it leads to a cooling of the auto industry, then this would certainly impact our strategy.”
If the stars align and economic stagnation (or crisis) is averted, Mueller said the car could go on sale as early as the third quarter of 2014, though a later introduction would be more likely.
