Official: Shelby GT350 revived with supercharged big block 5.0 V8
01/18/2010, 10:00 PM
By Andrew Ganz
Confirming Leftlane’s reports last week, Shelby American has brought back Carroll Shelby’s most historic race-ready car, the GT350, with a supercharged 5.0-liter big block V8 2011 Ford Mustang GT done in the spirit of the original 1965 GT350.
The 2011 Shelby GT350 starts life as a standard 2011 Ford Mustang GT, which is either shipped directly from the Flat Rock, Michigan, Mustang assembly plant or from a new Ford dealer. Shelby American then takes the “secretary’s car,” as Shelby himself calls the Mustang GT, and adds a Ford Racing/Whipple supercharger, Borla center exit exhaust, Cragar 19-inch wheels and Baer brakes to create a roughly 500-horsepower reborn GT350. Unique GT350 valve covers set off the underhood appearance.
A six-speed manual is the only available transmission.
The custom body is swathed in white paint with Guardsman racing stripes – like the original GT350 race cars – and includes a unique bodykit designed by former Ford and Hot Wheels designer Larry Wood. The look is designed to blend styling cues of the past with the 2011 Mustang shape, and it includes a unique front fascia, tail light trim, front splitter, rear deck lid filler panel, rear fascia, functional rocker and hood scoops and GT350 badging.
“In 1964, Ford Motor Company asked Shelby American to turn their secretary’s car into a race winner to help them sell Mustangs,” said Carroll Shelby in a statement released to the media. “Our Shelby GT350 ruled its class at the track and was feared by GM and Chrysler owners on the street. Enthusiasts have anticipated the GT350’s return since it went out of production in 1970. Now my band of hot rodders has created a car worthy of the name.”
The 2011 Shelby GT350 adds $33,995 to the price of a standard 2011 Ford Mustang GT.

But sweet to see Ford offering this once again…

Seriously.. did Shelby do ANYTHING to it? Or just order a bunch of parts online, screw it on, and call it a day? I have a feeling the old man did absolutely nothing to it. Look at that. Rice kit. Spinner rims. Pathetic.
I would give some respect if he did something special, WITHOUT the supercharger.. you know.. say, like WEIGHT REDUCTION. More power from N/A ENGINE. Heck, bore it out if you will. What the f.uck is this embarassment?
Please stop f.ucking around with modern cars Shelby. You remind me of aging boxers trying to make a come back.

I waited until 10:00pm EST for the Barrett-Jackson reveal. As soon as Carroll said, “I work for them” and ” They pretty much do whatever they want..” I knew we were in trouble. They pulled back the cover, and the nightmare began.
Amy Boylan, Shelby’s new president with self admitted “No experience whatsoever in automotive design” unveiled the new GT350.
In contrast to the beautiful, minimalist, razor sharp GT500 which looks as though it was designed by a top graduate of the the Art Center College of Design, it looks like the GT350 was designed by a 75 IQ Nascar lovin’ freedom hater hatin’ never left his home town of ..well you get the point. Lets go from back to front. Mabye I can sleep if I get this out:
-The wind spliter looks about the same quality plastic as the coleco pedal cars I had as a child.
-The upper and lower grill openings in no way relate to one another. (Mabye one person designed the top one, and someone else designed the bottom one, and they “suprised” each other at the reveal?
-Why would they not make the angle of the side of the top grill parallel to the inside of the headlights? This has been a standard shelby styling feature since 1968!
-It says GT350 on the grill,on the hood twice, and on the sides …WE GET IT!!
-The side skirt lines in NO way relate to the body lines of the car and look like a Quebec tuner added them
-Hey, the 1965 GT350 didnt have rear quarter windows, so, we should white out the rear quarter windows on the 2010..ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Imagine the laughs you are getting from any stylist working for Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc!!
-The wheels are by Cragar..this makes sense. Wait! lets choose cragars that look like something from pimp my ride..what would be appropraite for a muscle car?..possibly CHROME PLATED ALUMINUM????
-We’ll run the stripes over the front bumper, but not the back bumper…
-I really liked the 1996 Callaway corvette..mabye we should copy the exhaust treatment.
-Umm, where do we put the shelby logo on the back of the car?..We already have “Shelby” written 38 times on the car..are you sure we need it?..of course! there is some place between the licence plate and the black out panel..no need to BOTHER CENTERING IT!!
-Are those huge back up sensors in the middle of the back bumper? No, they are BACK UP LENSES FRO A 1968..WHY!!!!..NO STYLIST DO THIS!!!!
FORD, SHELBY, WAKE UP!!! Just like the way BMW offers the M “Package” and Audi has the S “line”, fpr people who want the look but not the cost of the M5 or S6, people wanted a GT350 that looks EXACTLY like the GT500, with the 5.0 coyote boosted to mabye 450hp at a price point half way between the GT and the GT500!!!
I feel like I am taking crazy pills!!!!

And the gt500 isn’t really track ready, the suspension blows, it’s really just an enthusiast car built for straightaways. Oh wait that’s my kind of racing, I see a gt500 in my future. Or I’ll just get a kenne bell & call it a day.

Umm 73camaro why so you say heavy parts? That engine is an aluminum 5.0, last time I checked it’s not that heavy & if it truly is a big block Im guessing they’re doing that to compensate for the supercharger, perhaps to alter the compression ratio to allow them to run more boost. But of couse this is just speculation.

Wow. People. Shelby American and Ford’s Shelby branded Mustangs are two different animals. Shelby works for Shelby American. Not Ford. Ford didn’t make this. Shelby American did and they do whatever they want, just like any other aftermarket tuner. No “program manager” at Ford had anything to do with this. Don’t bash Ford because of what someone decided to do with one of their cars. If so then lets bash Ferrari for letting people in Bahrain dip them in gold and Swarovski crystals.
I’ll also say that the real Ford Shelby GT500 looks and probably performs better and was designed by Ford designers, not some guy at a tuner shop like Shelby American. The body kit on this is way overdone. Ford doesn’t design “body kits”. They design full vehicles with fully integrated front and rear facias.
The only positive note is that the colors are great and the wheels look good in motion but that’s about it.

I’ll start with the admission that I think the original Shelby Cobra of AC origin is my favorite car of all time. So much so, that as soon as my sons are old enough to help, I’m going to build a kit version of the car. (As long as Shelby hasn’t sued them all out of business by then.)
However, this newest Shelby is a complete waste of money. Let’s take a quick look at some numbers you can pull from the internet: (All of them rounded up and very generous)
Ford Whipple supercharger: $7000
Bear Brakes: $3000
Aero Kit (painted) $4000
Wheels&Tires: $3000
Borla Exhaust: $1000
The Grand total is $18000
Therefore, the Shelby valve covers, trim piece, blue stripes and the knowledge that it was bolted together by a guy wearing Shelby overalls is worth about $15000. With that kind of money and an internet connection I could build a car that would destroy this GT350 in every way, except one…. on the floor of the hallowed Barrett-Jackson auction. A place where middle-aged men in Hawaiian shirts and jeans a bit too tight spend way too much money on cars. Therefore, if you buy one of these Shelby’s, you must make sure it is a One-of-One. I suggest pink leather seat inserts. It will be one of one and… priceless.

But NOT for $60,000! You could buy a Corvette Grand Sport (that will already out accelerate this and smoke it through turns) bolt on your own supercharger and have 800hp all for the same price as an overweight 500hp GT350.
But if you want a GT350 BUILD your own. $25,000 for the car, $1,000 for the body kit, $1,000 for paint, and $10,000 for a supercharger making 650hp, and you saved $20,000.

-Lets make a totally pointless taillight panel to add weight to the back of the car and improve the weight distribution???.. No need to CONTOUR IT TO THE TOP OF THE BUMPER!
-Lets black out above said tail light panel..why?..I dunno…it goes with..I mean it emphasizes…I really dont know..lets just do it “cuz”

Ok people have this misconception about small blocks, assuming that they must be small in terms of displacement & that people assume that big blocks must be large in displacement.
I’ve seen 300ci big blocks & 400ci small blocks and assuming that they made this into a big block, look no further that a head swap. I know it’s strange but no days I can put big block heads on what is traditionally accepted as a small block and then it becomes a big block.
As far as this goes, ford gave Shelby his start & without him american performance wouldn’t be like it is today. He drove innovation, without a performance mustang, would chevy have bothered, without the viper, would that corvette you like even exist like it sits. So take a moment and thank him.
Now Shelby helped design the gt500, and as far as your zo6 competing with this car don’t make me laugh. My grandfather has a 467rwhp 427r and it walks away from even new z06s. As far as spending this kind of money, there investing 20k worth of parts, giving you a warranty, and there pitting it all together. It’s expensive, but worth it. As they say, you gotta pay to play. And btw if this is a sanctioned race car then that make it worth the price of admission.
Ps boykit refers to ground effects put on by an aftermarket company, if ford put it on they’d call them ground effects. Fully integrated, huh, that must suck taking off yourwhole front end lol, you make me laugh.

I mean come on. The new 5.0 liter V8 makes 412 HP already. Put a supercharger on there and only have a 20% bump? It must be running between 3 and 4 PSI.
Not that you couldn’t out a smaller pulley on there and up the boost. But, at this price range, it should come tuned for more power from the factory. I’m guessing any more power and they were worried about impacting the Supersnake sales.
I’m sorry, but this is a Shelby FAIL.

Shelby has done some good stuff before, this one, not so much. I don’t see any design coherence throughout the entire car, and the cheesy riced-out body kit and rims aren’t helping. WTF did they smoke before designing the bumpers?? Are those small openings in the lower font fascia brake ducts? Or just the aftermath from a failed attempt at adding fog lights? Read in the article:
…”and includes a unique bodykit designed by former Ford and HOT WHEELS designer Larry Wood”
I rest my case.
A better take on the Shelby GT 350 (and yes, I know its technically its a “Shelby GT” but same idea)

Actually this car is designed for road racing with it being in the power band for hours, that’s why the standard small block couldn’t be expected to stand up to that abuse. Make it a big block, alter the compression & it’s a winner, but a street 5.0 with 11:1 compression is a walk in the park to supercharge because it isn’t always in the power band for hours at a time. Just remember that forged rods and crank with hyperuetectic pistons is capable of 8lbs of boost and higher if you did water methanol injection. Btw with forged components I can supercharge 13.1:1 compession and easily make it last & the 5.0 has what it needs to start with.
