The Washington State-based high-performance car builder Shelby SuperCars will now go by SSC North America in an effort to keep its distance from Carroll Shelby, the historic racer and custom car builder whose firm was unrelated to the supercar manufacturer.
Shelby SuperCars’ name was derived from its founder, Jerod Shelby, who has carved out a small niche as a builder of ultra-high-power supercars like the recently-unveiled 1,350-horsepower Tuatara.
SSC North America says that it will pursue “a new corporate identity strategy which more clearly identifies itself.”
Despite the shared surname, Jerod Shelby and Carroll Shelby are unrelated. The two Shelbys worked out a deal that will see SSC cease using the Shelby brand name in favor of the abbreviation. Currently, the supercar builder uses SSC in most of its marketing materials and on its vehicles, but it does often refer to itself under the full, spelled-out nomenclature.
