Should high-power German cars be stuck at 155 mph?

With German performance automobiles getting increasingly powerful with each revision, it’s a wonder carmakers like BMW and Mercedes are still abiding by their “gentlemen’s agreement” to limit vehicle speeds to 155 mph. But American customizer Turner Motorsport isn’t looking to play nice, and that’s why they’re offering an ECU upgrade that removes the electronic speed limiter from BMW’s M3 (E46), M5 (E60), and M6 (E63). In Europe, BMW will remove the speed limiter for $1500, but the kit from Turner Motorsport will do it for just $650. With the limiter removed, top speed should be somewhere around 200 mph for the BMW M6 and M5. The Leftlane Perspective: Perhaps it’s time to put an end to the 155 mph “gentlemen’s agreement.” It makes little sense amid what is otherwise known as the “horsepower race.” Post your thoughts in our comment section…

There are real car guys & there are guys with more money than car sense. The 155 limiter is good for the later group. The real car guys can buy the ECU upgrades.
