Sketches of Subaru’s FT-86 surface on the Web

10/08/2009, 2:20 PM

By Drew Johnson

Toyota has already revealed its share of Toyota-Subaru joint-venture – the Tokyo Motor Show-bound FT-86 Concept – but we have yet to hear anything on Subaru’s entry-level 2+2 offering. However, sketches of what appear to be Subaru’s take on the FT-86 have surfaced online.

While the FT-86 is ready for its auto show debut, the Subaru version is lagging much further behind. Because of Subaru’s rather shallow pockets, its version is literally still on the drawing board, with these sketches — revealed by Autocar – showing the coupe’s progress, or lack thereof.

Subaru has yet to give the coupe the official go-ahead, with the 2+2 still in the design phase. While Subaru designers are refining the car’s body, Subaru’s top executive are still debating if the car even fits within the company’s current lineup. Subaru has made a name for itself with versatile, all-wheel drive vehicles, with the rear-wheel drive coupe threatening to dilute that image.

It remains possible that Subaru could offer an AWD version of the car, but that would seem to go against the car’s intention of being a light-weight and inexpensive offering.

Some rumors have suggested the Subaru version of the car could debut alongside the Toyota FT-86 at this month’s Tokyo Motor Show, but there is little to support that at this time. If the Subaru version of the coupe does get the production nod, it will likely be a few years down the road.

a 2wd coupe is way off subie’s market focus, so i’d pass on this if i were them…if anything, stick awd in it and keep the family tradition going, but don’t shoot for an entry level coupe…put it into wrx/sti territory as a 2 door coupe alternative to the boxy impreza…all the performance, but without the utility, and hopefully with a better looking exterior…

I find it kinda funny that Toyota is asking for Subaru’s help for making a successor to the original AE-86. On the other hand, Toyota did gain its’ credibility back with that concept shown, so props to them for that.

On the other hand, I’m not so sure if a sporty 2+2 should be something that Subaru should build, especially if the article claims that their concept is still in the drawing stage and that Subaru’s funds are running low.

It’s one of those lessons: “They could do it, but should they?”

The Sketch look pretty good and I have to agree with A4 that this sketch does look like Ford. I am sure they will modify more in concept model unlike Hyundai; you can see there lineup are base from Lexus, BMW and Benz…….
I am so agree with Nickkop and Need for oil imports…….. I feels sorry for “Need more oil for GM” because nobody in here like your bias comment. I think it is best for you to stop come up with the bias comment or maybe switch to different name so nobody can recognize you……

I would think a sporty-looking AWD Subaru Coupe would sell quite well, esp if they can keep the starting price down in the $24k range or so. Didn’t the old Subaru hatchback in the 80s sell quite well? It would make a great commuter car for those of us in the snowbelt regions who do not want or need a 4-door on everything we drive, good for students to take to college etc..

If the Toyota trucks are a trend this POS like the Toyota coupe will decompose into a pile of rust by the time the warranty runs out.

Which means the engine just might outlast the car. See Toyota is improving!

What a joke. Buy a Cobalt SS if you want a real car that will last forever and never break down. Be American. buy American. This is GM Country.

TO NMOFGM,

Subaru’s have been rated as some of the highest quality automobiles on the road today. Subaru, along with other Japanese companies embraced Deming when he came to them with his ideas on total quality mangement. Deming came to them because GM laughed at him and didn’t take him serious. So, GM missed the quality management movement and if you look at any independent source (not the stuff spoon fed to you in your memo) then you will see this to be true.

As far as GM is concerned, i do hope they get back on their feet. You must realize however that as a business, as a firm, they are inferior to any other firm in the market. You see NMOFGM, a firm exists to turn resources such as land labor and capital into goods people wish to buy. This is the basis of all businesses our economic system. GM stopped being able to turn these resources inot stuff people wish to buy without ad campaigns begging people to buy their cars as some patriotic duty. SO, your rants about GM being the best company blah blah blah are in fact, false. So shut up

SUBARU,

Build it as an AWD anyway, Price it somewhat between the Impreza WRX and the LEGACY and don’t sweat TOYOTA offering the RWD-only version for $5k-$10K less. I think many people would be looking happily for something a bit smaller and lighter than the WRX recalling the WRX coupes of decades past.

Besides you’ll need something smaller and lighter to go up against the FORD FIESTA Rally cars, right?

Subaru came out with a sport car a long time ago and it tanked… can’t remember the name of it off hand and can’t find it with a quick google search. However, I think just outsourcing the engines to Toyota makes the most sense.

Also considering Toyota hasn’t done **** in the sport compact car world in like a decade it makes perfect sense to ask for help from the current SCC king: WRX STI. (Sorry to the Mitsu fans, but the Evo is not for me.)

howsmy, part of subaru’s marketing is most (if not ALL) their offerings are AWD its what sets them apart. Subaru could make this work , If they make it look better than this sketch and price is at a premium only slightly over the ‘Yota version, it would be a winning car. If they do an STI version…even nicer, it could be a nice AWD alternative to the genesis coupe

Aesir,

There were two to my Knowledge, the XT and the SVX. Both were remarkable cars at the time. I think they were directly aimed at the Skyline GT-Rs of the day. They just never caught on, most people bought DETROIT Muscle Coupes in those days. But SUBARU has a much better rep and recognition today. A small, reasonably priced, sports coupe would not be a bad thing.

People got different ideas on that car, so Subaru should offer both AWD and RWD. and I don’t think the car will look something like in the sketch, except 2doors and 4 wheels. Subaru should prove that their design is as good as Toyota or better. I love both ideas, but I will get Toyota for AE86’s namesake.

I am curious to see more on this Subie. If you look at their monthly sales over the past two years, for the most part they increased every month comparted to the previous year. And this was at a time when everyone else was tanking big time. They had to be doing something right.

I do agree that a 2+2 is a tough market for Subaru… BUT its about how u call it. If they call it a legacy coupe i think its actually quite an easy sell… I mean look at the genesis and genesis coupe, apart from the platform being stretched and shrunk, there’s nothing similar between the 2 (i could be wrong).
