2009 Skoda Superb

01/09/2008, 1:59 PM

By Drew Johnson

Skoda has released images of its Superb sedan ahead of the car’s Geneva Motor Show debut in March. Based on the Volkswagen Passat, the next-generation Superb will feature a more unique design theme than the current model.

Compared to previous Superb, the new model is 35 mm longer and 18 mm wider. However, the car’s height has been decreased by 8 mm and its wheelbase has shrunk by 42 mm.

The sedan will be available with six different VW engine: three gasoline units and three diesels. Power will range from 105 horsepower to 260. Transmissions choices will include a range of manuals as well as VW’s dual-clutch automatic.

The Superb’s list of equipment includes adaptive cornering headlamps, a new electronic air conditioning system, automatic parking assist and nine airbags.

The Skoda Superb will hit the European market in the second half of 2008 and will be built in the Czech Republic.

I love the look. I think it looks much better then current Passat. It is not entirely unique (C pillar and rear door shape are fairly standard), but the rest of the car is definitely can not be confused with anyone else. Unfortunately for us in US, we will not see this car, but some bastard child of VW out of Mexico.

I wish they had swapped the door handles out…those are waaay too “Volkswagen”

Other than that, good job on differentiating. I don’t think it’s as stylish as the Passat, but it’s the cheaper variant anyways, right? It doesn’t have to be the best looking.

did they hire some Koreans to design it? It has that certain “borrow-some-of-this, borrow-some-of-that” look…

You know what, I thought about it a little. Why do I have so much hostility towards Skoda? I don’t have a reason. My family never owned one, and I think the design is quite pleasant actually. Reminds me of a Volvo S80 from the rear 3/4 view. The lights up front are a bit like the 7-series. Not bad overall….

The only real innovation on this vehicle is the dual-hinged trunk (that can open either at the base of the window like a regular trunk, or with the rear window to open like a full hatchback). If only the styling reflected this innovation.. but instead looks like an amalgam of Saab 900 rear roofline, VW Jetta greenhouse, and Jaguar front end.

Don’t like it.

First, it is just a Volkswagen.

Second, the tail lights look those of a BMW-Mercury smoothie…not good

I’m not the biggest fan of Skodas, but the only Skoda I rode in was in the back seat because it was a taxi. Even though it has a lot of design cues from BMW, VW and Jaguar, it does look sophisticated. But I’ll never be seeing these on the road because I’m on the other side of the pond.

Deanster, Skoda did stand for **** 15 years ago, since Check Republic was Communist country and had no chance of doing anything good. The system would not allow it. However, if you bother to Google Skoda and its tremendous history, you would learn that Check engineers and designers developed a lot of technologies used by everyone else. France lost the war very quickly, in part because its armament was manufactured or licensed to manufacture from Checks. Famous Bren machine gun used in Britain and by Japan is of Check design (hence a name – it is abbreviated and nobody could pronounce it). Original air cooled Porsche engines are coming from Skoda. Great number of cabs in Europe are made by Skoda. VW bought Skoda because it has great lineage and history of great engineering. As far as quality goes it is equal or better then VW in Europe and much better then **** produced in Mexico. In VW plants in Europe the labor force consists of Turks, Arabs and Serbs; Serbs being most capable. Checks are much more sophisticated (just think of Bohemian beer!) including Budweiser.

I can’t believe there are 20 posts about a f*cking Skoda. Gawd people, go jerk off or wash your panties until something relevant comes up.

Thanks Autonut.

I believe it’s “Czech,” not “Check,” although I’m sure the alcoholic Czech bastards don’t care since they’re the feature of the day in LLN.

Really disappointing.. Skoda had really kicked their design game up the last few years, and now this?

Looks like a fat last generation Laguna..
