Deanster, Skoda did stand for shit 15 years ago, since Check Republic was Communist country and had no chance of doing anything good. The system would not allow it. However, if you bother to Google Skoda and its tremendous history, you would learn that Check engineers and designers developed a lot of technologies used by everyone else. France lost the war very quickly, in part because its armament was manufactured or licensed to manufacture from Checks. Famous Bren machine gun used in Britain and by Japan is of Check design (hence a name – it is abbreviated and nobody could pronounce it). Original air cooled Porsche engines are coming from Skoda. Great number of cabs in Europe are made by Skoda. VW bought Skoda because it has great lineage and history of great engineering. As far as quality goes it is equal or better then VW in Europe and much better then shit produced in Mexico. In VW plants in Europe the labor force consists of Turks, Arabs and Serbs; Serbs being most capable. Checks are much more sophisticated (just think of Bohemian beer!) including Budweiser.

I’m not the biggest fan of Skodas, but the only Skoda I rode in was in the back seat because it was a taxi. Even though it has a lot of design cues from BMW, VW and Jaguar, it does look sophisticated. But I’ll never be seeing these on the road because I’m on the other side of the pond.

The only real innovation on this vehicle is the dual-hinged trunk (that can open either at the base of the window like a regular trunk, or with the rear window to open like a full hatchback). If only the styling reflected this innovation.. but instead looks like an amalgam of Saab 900 rear roofline, VW Jetta greenhouse, and Jaguar front end.

You know what, I thought about it a little. Why do I have so much hostility towards Skoda? I don’t have a reason. My family never owned one, and I think the design is quite pleasant actually. Reminds me of a Volvo S80 from the rear 3/4 view. The lights up front are a bit like the 7-series. Not bad overall….

I wish they had swapped the door handles out…those are waaay too “Volkswagen”

Other than that, good job on differentiating. I don’t think it’s as stylish as the Passat, but it’s the cheaper variant anyways, right? It doesn’t have to be the best looking.

I love the look. I think it looks much better then current Passat. It is not entirely unique (C pillar and rear door shape are fairly standard), but the rest of the car is definitely can not be confused with anyone else. Unfortunately for us in US, we will not see this car, but some bastard child of VW out of Mexico.
