Skoda unveils rugged Yeti MPV

03/03/2009, 3:43 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Earlier today at the Geneva Motor Show, Skoda unwrapped its much-delayed Yeti crossover. Aimed at emerging market buyers, the Yeti offers lots of space in a cheap, efficient and rugged package. The Yeti will be available with front- or four-wheel-drive and a variety of gasoline and diesel engines.

Gas engines on offer include Skoda’s 1.2-liter and 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinders, while three 2.0-liter TDI diesels will also be available. Diesel power ranges from 109-horsepower up to a range-topping 168-horsepower.

Yeti sits high to give drivers a better view of the road, but Skoda says it possesses handling dynamics more akin to a traditional car than a crossover. The interior is functional but constructed of rugged materials fitting with its positioning.

Skoda expects the Yeti to help bolster its sales, which set a record in 2008 thanks to strong markets in Russia and Eastern Europe.

It’s handsome. It would be nice if it were U.S. bound.

I believe it’s already in the states… but as the Audi Q5 and the Volkswagen Tiguan… I believe they all use the same platform.
