Smart is expecting to have at least 10 stand-alone stores when the ForTwo minicar hits U.S. shores this January. Penske Automotive Group, distributor for Smart, plans on an additional initial network of 40 dealerships and possibly as many as 70 within a few years.
According to Automotive News, the first exclusive Smart dealership is being built in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Smart also plans on making Bloomfield Hills the company’s corporate headquarters. The Smart stores will forgo using the owner’s name and will all follow the same naming scheme; Smart Center followed by city name, such as Smart Center Bloomfield Hills.
