Smart shoppers: over 20,000 deposits for U.S. Smarts

07/10/2007, 3:06 PM

By Andrew Ganz

More than 20,000 people in the United States have placed a $99 deposit to reserve a Smart Fortwo when the car goes on sale in January. The cars will be available from between 45 and 60 dealers at launch.

The Detroit News reports that the car, designed by DaimlerChrysler, will be distributed in the United States by Roger Penske’s United Auto Group and that 60 percent of the dealers will be Mercedes-Benz stores, some of which sell Maybach ultra-luxury cars. Interestingly, some dealers’ selection will range the gamut, from tiny, economical Smart minicars to standard Mercedes-Benz cars to massive Maybach sedans.

And I’m one of them, YES laugh all you want. My area is perfect for it. However, the recently-announced hybrid sounds more enticing.

What this car needs is vertical tilting. Imagine parking this car by tipping it nose-up on its tail. You could probably put 4 in a a conventional parking spot.

They’ve been selling well in Canada for a couple years now…got a Benz/Smart dealership just down the road from me. Not for me personally, but definitely smart idea.

Agreed LuckyLou, even without the incentives like reserved parking spots, etc., that exist in Europe, I’ve seen lots of them zipping around Toronto, and quite a few in Montreal, that tends to embrace all things European.

I saw these all over Italy. It’s like a Segway for two or when I seen people tooling around Atlanta on scooters; it seems way out of context.

Cute.

I’d feel terrified, driving along I-15 with those 18-wheelers in this. hate to be going through a mountain pass.

The Smart car is not for me, but I can see it being a hit with a lot of people who place fuel economy as probably the top priority. And quite honestly, these Smart cars are supposed to stand up pretty well to crashes.

I could see these things being extremely useful for inner-city situations where parking is at a big time premium.

Happy that people get the choice if they want it. I think they are a little silly but if thats what you want to tool around in then its America, go for it.
Like global_lighting said, put 4 casters on the back end of the thing, tilt it up and then push it into any tiny open spot. Or maybe a handle on the front bumper so you can just take it with you. :-)

I hope I don’t hit that thing while pedaling my Mongoose. I’d flip it over and kill everyone inside.

то сделало мной смех madcapp. ваше право если люди хотят получить убитыми в франтовском автомобиле тогда, то идут вперед.

That was very funny madcapp. I have to say ya thoughs dam cars are just two small but if everyone wants to die by hiting a dog or someone on there bike with there car then let them.

Автомобиль запруды не хорош потому что он может только держать 2 люд и мешок гольфа также франтовское не может потянуть шлюпку 30ft.

The dam car is not good because it can only hold two people and a golf bag also a smart cant haul a 30ft boat or someones travel trailer.

Good to see that more than a few people in the US have actually embraced this car. I personally would buy a Honda Fit for the money, but I don’t live in a city, where this car would be perfect. As for being scared on the highway, I’ve seen a few brave souls who took theirs out on the Autobahn in Germany, so it can’t be that much worse on I-95.

My wife and I saw Smart Cars in Rome when we were there on vacation. They were pretty cool and at the time I was seriously thinking about buying one if they were ever sold for a reasonable price in the US.
Since they Toyota came out with the Prius. It gets about the same gas mileage, is more than twice as big, and pollutes less. When it was time for us to buy a new car we bought the Prius.

People putting up the $99 dollars are doing it to turn around and put it on EBAY. So, the few suckers that are willing to pay the ridiculous price for this thing are going to have to buy their place in line as well.

I’m not sure about this car; for less you can get a Yaris or Fit, and the size penalty is negligible. Plus, you get a backseat and useable space, plus better options.
