Smokers beware: Ontario to enact auto smoking ban to protect children
05/02/2008, 8:28 AM
By Drew Johnson
The government of Ontario introduced a bill last Wednesday that calls for a smoking ban in cars when children are present. If the legislation is made into law, it will make it illegal to smoke in any vehicle while a person 16 years old or younger is a passenger.
Moreover, the proposal covers pretty much any scenario — whether the car is moving or stationary and would apply even if a smoker had a window, sunroof, roof, door or other feature open. The fine for such an offense would be 250 Canadian dollars.
Ontario would not be the first to enact such a law as Nova Scotia, Yukon, Arkansas, California, Maine, Louisiana, Puerto Rico, South Australia and Tasmania already have similar legislation in place, according to Canadian Driver.

Would anyone dare say this is a bad law? Does it impede on “your” right to smoke wherever you feel like? I would like to see anyone state this law is ‘Big Brother’ taking away their right to smoke in their car and that they can harm their child they see fit. Or is it because they think the harm of second hand smoke is nothing but lies from health officials and the government?
As one can see, I am a proponent of this Bill. Makes sense to protect children from the harmful effects of second hand smoke. Opening a window doesn’t stop the smoke from circulating around the cabin of the car — a false sense of security.

Smoking is retarded anyway. Something is wrong when you can’t fight the urge to light one up when your kids are around. If parent’s are that irresponsible, imagine how their kids will turn out.

Yay Canada…
It’s about time someone took a stand to end smoking… especially when children are present.

So… can we get an expansion of this law to cover motorists in other cars? I hate sitting beside someone in traffic who is just puffing away on a cancer stick.

This law is big brother, but that’s not why I’d be opposed to it. I’m opposed to such laws because it lays the foundation for other nanny laws to be enacted. Once we start down such a slippery slope it’s hard to stop. I’m also against such laws because we’re encroaching on the rights of a few when, at least in America, the minority are supposed to have an equal say. I don’t smoke as I think it’s both nasty & far too expensive, but I’m not for this anti-smoking campaign that’s being raged in the media right now.

So now we can add Canada as the next communist country list. Whats next, we can not play music while driving or slipping a cup of coffee.
My parents smoked in the car and I’ve turn out alright. Probably a woman came up with this law.

^^ Dude, I hear what your screaming, but parents have NO need to smoke around their kids. Everybody today complains they have a right to this and that, grow up. Why isn’t their a screaming debate over total BS like affirmative action, NAFTA, hillary clinton and nancy pelosi wanting to tax MY 401K. If your so hung up on rights, what about the kids right to not smell that crap.

You shouldn’t need a law for this, I agree. But it’s the parent’s responsibilty not to put their kids in harms way, until they make public beatdowns legal, what else can we do in the meantime. Oh, and I can’t stand politicians and the growing communist govt here in the U.S, just so you know.

This is stupid because smoking around kids is harmless to them, I grew up around smoke, my parents grew up around smoke, and my grandparents grew up around smoke, and all of us are alive and well.

Good, nothing is worse then looking over at the car beside you at a light with two kids in car seats and Mom smoking away up front with the window barely cracked. It’s so white trash.
Common sense would tell me I would rather my kids not smell like they have been in a bar.

If there is an overwhelming (or overbearing) support for no smoking in cars law in Canada, why there is overwhelming (or overbearing) resistance to CAFE legislation in US, which has the same goal: to protect lungs (children included). Should we promote tail pipe pollution and issue a law to order parents place gas masks on children while parents driving fuel dazzling, planet polluting fast V8 cars & trucks? It’s OK for Canadians to be regulated, but since CAFE may may inconvenience our vices – screw CAFE and environmentalist?

I agree. It is actually is being regulated, but I think states are leading those regulations. I am sure there are no highly polluting factories in Vermont, acid rain is an “export” from Michigan, Ohio, industrious New York.

HemiR is right: there shouldn’t have to be a law. This is just common sense. That, however, seems to be a commodity in very short supply when it comes to way too many people. The saddest part is when you see the douched out hag puffing away in the rusted out ‘89 Aerostar with the 3 future welfare cases in the back, is that at 8 bucks a pack that money would have been way better spent on say, food or clothes for her tribe. Or a pack of Nicorette.

Oh yes, what a fiiiiine law to protect kids.
.
Kids can hurt or snap their necks from strong acceleration, so I think their should be a law imposing the installation of speed limiters, acceleration limiters, and horsepower limations on all cars, new and old (old must be converted by October 08) to protect the children. 0-60 shall never be attained by law in under 18 seconds.
.
Also, cornering causes kids to slide and maybe pinch their hands. Henceforth cornering in excess of .28 Gs will result in a ticket being debited to your credit card. Enforcement will be by camera or by the built in acceleration limiter which can measure it.
.
Cars which are not bright orange pose a threat to children as they are harder to see (grays, blacks, and whites blend with the surroundings). To protect kids all cars must be painted bright orange by summer.
.
.
You supporters getting the point? This law is bull****. I don’t smoke and I find it foul but this law is still bull****. The control-crap is why I hate all governments everywhere.

What a bunch of whiney, bitching botards… then we have ones like HRR who sit there and blatantly contradict themselves.
The specific subject of this proposed legislation doesn’t matter… what matters is that there’s something inherently wrong with these sort of statutes. Granted, this is up in Canada… but I am livid at the thought of anything like this being enacted in the US.
Again… we have someone like HRR whining and bitching about other people whining and bitching about their rights to do this, that, or whatever… and that they should “grow up.” I am completely, wholeheartedly disgusted by such an attitude… what’s your address HRR? Because I need to send you a copy of the United States Constitution to read at you leisure… I might send along a copy of the Declaration of Independence just to make sure you’ve got the backstory down.
At least in the States… it’s not the government’s place to “protect” all of the children because it’s not the government’s place to regulate, nor interfere with the lives of American citizens. Anyone with such an apathetic attitude towards their rights, such as HRR don’t deserve them. It’s the very same apathetic attitude which has lead to such egregious violations of the core fundamentals this country was founded on like the (un)Patriot Act, or willful lies to the nation for pursuit of unwarranted military action, or the blatant circumvention of our Judiciary, or the inept placations by the legislature towards the executive.
The founding principles of this nation are based around the notion that every American is born with inherent rights and powers to live as they want and to govern themselves. The government has NO rights and NO natural power… it’s right to govern is basically “on loan” by the citizenry and any power it wields is by through those extended to it by each and every American citizen.
Rights aren’t given to the people, it’s the other way around… and most importantly, any right or privilege that is not specifically mentioned by the Constitution or the Bill of Rights is implicitly, inherently reserved by the people.
Each time another wretched law meant to control and regulate the daily lives of the population at large is enacted unchecked, it’s another step towards an all-encompassing police state… it’s another admission by the people that we do not have the right to live freely and that we’re either incapable or unwilling to govern ourselves.
It’s pathetic… and more and more people are pathetic. We’re on the brink of letting this grand experiment called America fall into failure and once it does, things will never be the same. Pathetic… it’s absolutely pathetic that we’re seemingly so willing to hand our children and grandchildren over to complete tyranny. America is never going to fall to a foreign enemy… it’s going to fall to the apathy of its own citizens.
