Solstice coupe due next year?

07/31/2007, 9:59 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Merely minutes after the Pontiac Solstice roadster was launched, members of the media and the public alike were asking if General Motors had planned to build a hardtop version. Last year, GM’s head car guy, Bob Lutz, said that a coupe was an almost sure thing, and now the automaker is rumored to have the coupe ready at some point in 2008, sooner than was previously expected.

According to Automotive News, the hardtop Solstice will usher in boosted performance expected to be carried into the roadster. Pontiac will stick with four-cylinder engines; any development on a V6 for the cars has been shelved. The V6 engines GM was developing would have been too heavy for the car’s balance, according to insiders familiar with the program.

The Solstice will carry on Pontiac’s performance line, as the GTO is officially off of the tables for at least the short term.

They better make a gxp version. I own a white solstice gxp right now and I’m extremely happy with the car. Great acceleration and handling. If the coupe gxp is quite a bit lighter than the convertible, I bet it could outperform that ugly 135i that everyone is so excited about for some reason.

Hopefully the coupe ends up looking better than the roadster does. I did not think anyone would come out with a roadster uglier than the Z4 but Pontiac stepped up to the challenge and succeeded.

They should turbocharge a 2.4 Liter to get around 300 horsepower. That will be an amazing car.

What a gorgeous car! I’ll have to disagree though with their issue regarding the V6. Mallett stuck the base Vette V8 in the roadster version, beefed up the suspension, and the car performed like the convertible Vette for $20k less. It’s not a matter of imbalance, they don’t want to canabalise sales of the Vette. Considering how beautiful the Solstice is, I would probably buy one over the Vette anyway if I were in the market.

I hope the future gens of this car focus on trimming weight with an aim towards the Elise and S2000. This could be a great track racer.

Damn Bush you figured it out! It was a toss up between the Pacer and the Aztec!

Sorry it bothers you I think the Solice is ugly but I am far from the only one who does. Maybe if Pontiac had left the stupid looking Pontiac trademark BMW ripoff grill off the front of the car, put a convertible top on it that did not look like an afterthought and not put those stupid GM badges on the fenders it might look a little better, leaving the round backup lights off the rear bumper and intergrating them into the taillights might help too.

Gotta disagree the jonstew. The car is hot.
Anyway, I wonder if a predictably lighter coupe version would be faster or slower in acceleration at a light. Such is the case in the new Miata hard top. It is heavier, but it out-accelerates the lighter manual top because it gets more power to the ground (MotorWeek TV, I think). Obviously, when you hit the twistys lighter is better. That’s what I care about. I’m with piablo, I’d like to see this car on a diet and drive it on a road course. I’ve never driven a car that is more thrilling at this than the Miata.

The car is beautiful… that is, before you put liscence plates on it! Then it reminds you of a bucktooth beaver…

Make a *small number* of coupes with a V-8 and it will become none less than a classic.

Doesn’t work for me, but I’m probably in the monority.
They should bring it out, but not make a Sky coupe.

I think Piablo’s right about the V8. How different could the GM V6 be? The engine compartment of a small roadster is only so big, and how much can the V6 weigh? You’d have to think that the engine’s weight would be the primary consideration regarding balance. If a V8 works just nice, why not a V6? A V8 Solstice coupe would likely be at a far lower price point than a ‘Vette’s, which might be too enticing for potential Vette buyers.
The Z4 IS one of the ugliest cars designed. I think the Sky looks better than the Solstice, but the Pontiac still looks good.

At least it addresses the problem of the crappy fitting top and the lack of luggage space when top down.

A V-6 would be a smart choice, but if they made a Solstice coupe with V-8’s in smaller numbers like I mentioned then that would make it great.

I can’t imagine a Sky Coupe… Let’s never bring that up again.

jonstew,

with regard to the details you bring up ie. badges etc. I agree with that, but overall I think its a real improvment for GM. They can do it – if they (management?) would just stop shooting themselves in the foot all the time.

This car will be nothing but a bonafide hit. With the sales of chick cars like the Z4, Porsche, Miata and 350Z pretty much dead now that the hot new Kappas are on the market, a coupe form could only bring even more traffic into the Pontiac and Saturn showrooms. And as V-series mentioned, the ugly 1-series that people are getting worked up about, well don’t worry because LLN is pretty much the only place you’ll find that kind of interest. Everywhere else people are disgusted by the newest BMW, they’d probably rather have the Solstice instead. The BMW is too slow and those cars spend way too much time in the shop to be worth the money.

I think a Sky coupe is inevitable, considering the Sky is sold as the Opel GT elsewhere in the world, and the original Opel GT was ONLY sold as a coupe! Perhaps GM plans to build/rebadge the Solstice coupe as an Opel GT (with the Sky’s front end of course) but not sell it in the US as a Saturn.

They don’t need to up the displacement on the turbo, the 2.0 has a square bore and stroke, so it’s optimal.

And it’s why they can push 20lbs of boost factory.

What they need to do is make some upgrades available through GM Performance Parts, like they’ve done with the Cobalt SS. That’d make it really perform for people who desire that.

No need for a v6 with the Turbo Direct Injection 2.0 4 cyl. putting out 260 h.p., (I hope GM can get this engine in more products, now that they cancelled the supercharged 2.0) but I do like the idea of a Limited Edition V8 collector car, good idea.

I believe your one of those “retards” Renton mentioned. Your vocabulary and punctuation stinks, you chose very short minded statements, and don’t match any sense of humor that others have had on this site if that’s what your trying to achieve.

The Z4 and 350Z don’t really compete with this car, in terms of powertrain and price, regardless of the base price being manipulated torwards demand and over-MSRP hikes.
