teahead, I concur with job saving part. I actually believe that most of cars build domestically is done by foreign labels: Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and somewhat Nissan. Domestics have been enamored with Mexico for a very long time and GM is investing more in new factories in Brazil, China, India and Russia more then in US.

What is wrong w/saving US jobs anyways?

We’re competing w/other countries that do the same thing. THey pay for their workers’ healthcare, they bail our their car companies.

I guess you’d rather have us all working for $7.00/hour at Wal-Mart.

BTW, the last 25 years of trickle-down economics of giving huge tax cuts for the well off ballooning the debt to $11 trillion under Bush…how’s that workin’? We’re doing really good w/that and have a heck of a lot to show for that kind of economics, eh?

I assume he’s doing this to try to preserve American jobs (either that or he’s a complete fool), which is a purely s o c i a l i s t c o m m u n i s t agenda. And it won’t work ulitmately, because Fiat has zero interest in preserving American jobs. Fiat wants Chrysler’s dealership and distribution network so they can sell Fiat 500′s and other crap they build overseas. Basically Chrysler will give Fiat an instant “in” to the U.S. and Canadian market. It’s all win for Fiat, and all lose for Chrysler, it’s employees, and it’s stakeholders.

And the Treasury has NO BUSINESS offering to buy the Chrysler debt, especially if Chrysler is going to file anyway. It should be Fiat paying for the Chrysler debt, not the Treasury. This whole thing is bordering on insanity.

This is so screwed up it’s unbelievable. Obama and his administration are being complete fools with this Chrysler / Fiat deal. Basically, Obama will be giving all of Chrysler to Fiat for FREE, at the expense of Chrysler debt holders, equity holders, and taxpayers.

Chrysler should deserve a chance to stay. GM is doing great, and will be better without its sub-brand ( HUMMER, Buick, Saab, Saturn) but not Pontiac, both shouldn’t be forced to bankrupt . The ones that should get out and force to bankrupt years ago are Hyundai and Kia. Those cheap metal from Korean auto makers are best of the worst. Honestly, I’m not an American, I’m not an American’s cars fan either. I don’t understand why Americans buy those cheap crap$ from Hyundai and Kia. Americans should buy American cars. C’mon people make your auto industries alive.

Chrysler isn’t going anywhere, and neither is GM. I know that’s not what some of you want to hear, but unless Obama wants to lose the next election, he must keep his promise to help the Big 3 restructure. The “Auto Task Force” knows damn well that if they are forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy:

A. Thousands of dealers will suddenly shut down – resulting in massive, widespread new unemployment claims of not just dealership employees, but all the local business that cater to them as well.

B. Dozens of factories will be shut down down – resulting in the bankruptcies of hundreds of parts suppliers who are already hanging off the proverbial cliff’s edge.

Obama knows damn well that any progress being made on the economy will come to a grinding halt in this scenario.

Buy American. It’s not just a matter of jobs, it’s a matter of national security as well.

@moparsalesman1, but I DO reference the banks and their f#@ked-up fiascos on other appropriate blogs. Chrysler/Cerberus is a privately owned company. Period. It was worst than hedge funds when Cerberus first came to the table scheming. Now, they have just screwed the US taxpayers even further. Nothing against you, but your theory of the others car manufacturers would mean that Chrysler should not be at the lull that they are, but commensurate with the competition. BTW, my wife and I never buy our cars at four percent dealer profit—we always pay more as we have friends in the business, and we look for a fair deal for both parties. I’ve said this too many times, but Peter Drucker warned the American automotive industry decades ago about the retirees, unions, et al, and they simply did not give a sh!t. It is obvious the world does not need the amount of vehicle manufacturers that it now has; it just unfortunate that US manufacturers are the first to go.

Daimler screwed Chrysler by stealing all their cash and dictating poorly designed exteriors and interiors to CHEAPEN the brand so it can’t overlap with Mercedes.

Also, do we really need to spend $510-530B/year on defense? I mean seriously, you want to know about waste, don’t have to dig to far there in the defense budget.

Rather bail out manufacturers who actually MAKE something than just having it all go belly up and all go overseas.

You know what LLLL3 dont be so harsh nobody is bitching about the banks that arent lending money. Just the other day we had a 693 fico score plenty of trade lines good standing 15 yrs in the bureau and it took four hours to get an approval on a used car. You want to complain about the taxpayers money. Complain about these fu**in banks who arent lending s**t still. This deal should have been a no brainer and banks should be fighting over this customer not running away. If people were getting loans we would be selling a hell of a lot more cars. Despite what you may here traffic going through our stores is not off much. You just have to be a better salesperson and qualify and build value give them a good demonstration and ask for the god damn sale. Dont s**t on Chrysler or any of the D3. This crap will be happening to the japanese and germans very soon. Look at the article today about how far VW is down and they are taking over as the largest auto manufacturer. Chrysler, Ford, and GM have a lot more retirees than the other companies and thats part of the reason it’s costing so much money right now. Not to mention you have sources like Edmunds who tell you fair dealer profit is 4%. I dont know about you but you cannot make a living of mini deals. So the consumer doesnt let the manufacturer make big profits(all manufacturers), banks stop lending money, and people dont spend the money they have. That contributes to this ever worsening economy. If people were buying period, we wouldnt have needed the damn money.

NGR, its not all about sub prime lending and financial derivatives, its also about the market. Just the fact that there are more registered cars in the US than licensed drivers points to the fact that WE HAVE TOO MANY CARS. Purchases would naturally need to take a downturn so that the 1 car : 1 driver equilibrium is restored.

That would be something if Fiat injected cash into Chrysler and then both go bankrupt anyways. Chrysler may be too far gone by now, hence the bankruptcy preparation by the government, for Fiat to do any good.
