Police in South Africa decided it was time to get tough on speeders, so they jailed 11 motorists Sunday morning during an anti-speeding operation. A man was arrested for driving at 219km/h (137mph) on the N3 highway in Linksfield, said metropolitan police. He and 10 other held for driving at more than 180km/h were to spend the night in cells and were due to appear in various courts on Monday. “The man’s excuse was that he was in a hurry to get to the airport,” Mokheseng said. Three others, driving a BMW , a Mercedes and a Nissan , were arrested for driving at more than 200km/h. “One man’s excuse was that he was hurrying to get to the Wesbank raceway,” said Mokheseng. “Another person said they were in a hurry to get to a meeting.” Speed limits on South African highways range from 100km/h to 120km/h (62-75 mph).
