Speculation: 2009 Volvo S40

03/02/2007, 1:44 PM

By admin

With each generation, Volvo slowly sheds its reputation for conservative styling. If illustrations from German magazine AutoZeitung are any indication, Volvo may be planning an S40 with more attitude than its rivals, the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class.

With the 2007 S80 and 2008 V70 positioned squarely against the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class, it appears Volvo might merge the S40 and S60 lines into a single new entry-level luxury sedan, with the C and 3er firmly in its sights.

Several recent reports have indicated Volvo will axe its S60 model, suggesting this new 3-Series fighter will make use of the S40 nameplate. The 2009 S40 will grow in size, but will still be priced to undercut its German rivals.

AutoZeitung’s illustration takes major design cues from the radical Volvo XC60 Concept. Conceivably, the XC60 could share a platform with the new S40 and V50.

That’s rather aggressive for a Volvo. I like it. Build it.

That grill is so huge, my first impression what that it was a crossover. With so many European and Japanese manufacturers going after the entry-level/under luxury market, i wonder why American car companies in total have only 1: the caddy cts. Or am i missing something?

Styling….niiiiiiiice!

Too bad it’s a Volvo.

Point the engine in the right direction and power the rear weals like real Volvos did back in the day.

Ricardo… Try and comment on the photo. The photo is talking about change that may take place, your talking about the past. Obviously if you only talk about Volvo now and previously, you will have the same opinion about them. Try and open your mind by clicking the LINK and checking out the concept pics instead of opening your ass and speaking

it has some design elements from the is but it leaves out the boring and dispraportionated(is this a word) aspects that the IS delivers.

if someone told me, back in 95, that this would be a volvo i wouldn’t believe. Now look at cadillac, i even like the angles design and stuff, but it isn’t as radical as they did with volvo. they got something to teach about brand recognition. everyone remember the boxy volvos…then, they come with that line front to back and that rear lamps. everyone remember that too. now they’ve come with this! ford should know that slapping a tribar in everything isn’t the way to go.

Looking at the illustration:

either this is going to be RWD

OR

the final product will look nothing like this…

the front over hang is almost non-existant…

This illustaration is an indepandant graffic job who works for the magazine that printed the article. Im surprised u guys buy it – it’s a common thing done by motomagazines. He took a picture of recant volvo small SUV concept and digitally transform it into sedan look (mediocre job by the way). Illustrations or pics which r not realised and confirmed by a specific car company design or marketing dept. are always somebody’s wishfull thinking, guess or just digital fantasy.

Until the real thing comes out I’ll refrain from commenting on styling. It’s interesting though that they might make it bigger so that it’s positioned like the S80, you get more for what you pay for.

At first I couldn’t imagine Volvo dropping their best selling S60, but now that the more mainstream S80 is here and the coming V70 is obviously based on that model, a new S60 seems redundant (unless Volvo takes my advice and recasts it as a trendy 4-door coupe, which is close to how they actually touted the original S60 in the first place!) with a larger S40 on the way. However, I don’t see a new S40 hitting American shores before 2010 at the earliest (the current S40/V50 got here in late 2004), so what becomes of the S60 until then?

Obviously this IS the XC60 concept reworked into a sedan version – nothing new here. I think Volvo should call it an S60 to keep it more up-market. Volvo is positioned to become one of the most desirable car lines available (similar to Audi in the late 90’s except Volvo has a stronger heritage of safety and quality to rest on than Audi had).

Turbo FWD/AWD sounds more inline with Audi. The styling is somewhat reserved which is also what Audi’s are striving for.

Volvo has been in the doldrums for quite some time. They need to find their place again the automotive world. My parents had one, my professor(s) had them; my neighbors had them. Volvo has never been know for being too wild or cutting edge—more for a staid, but predictable sensibility. I find nothing what with that theme since it has served Volvo well, and locked them into a niche market all their own. Now if they can only recapture that theme.

too bad driving a volvo is more akin to a toyota than an audi. i find it laughable that volvo considers the S60R an M3 competitor, doesnt everyone else?
