Spied: 2008 Subaru WRX hatchback

09/13/2006, 7:40 AM

By admin

Spy photographer Chris Doane for Brenda Priddy & Company caught a disguised 2008 Subaru WRX in testing this week in California. Previously, there have been several sightings of possible WRX test mules (in Legacy bodies). These pictures show an actual WRX prototype. The car is expected to take some inspiration from the Subaru B5 concept, though evidently not as much as one might expect. As for power, insiders are anticipating a big update to the 2.5-liter H4 turbo, with an output of around 330-horsepower. Priddy says the Impreza name could change for the 2008 model year. Gallery after the jump…

I’ll reserve final judgment for when I see it in person, but this looks good so far. I too hope they make a 2 door version.

An A3 smoker in performance no doubt. Too bad Subaru as a company suck for customer SERVICE – previous WRX lemon owner.

Current WRX owner (02), I haven’t had any issues with mine. And they are quite easy to work on as well. I’m excited to see a hatch back offering. I wonder if they’ll plan to run this model in WRC?

Looks like a knockoff on the Mazda3 or 5 or whatever to me… if it weren’t for the hood scoop, who could tell the difference?

[...] First spy shots of the upcoming Subaru Impreza hatchback are hitting the ‘net. Snapped under disguise while undergoing testing in California, you can begin to see the shape the new Impreza will take. As we reported earlier, the next Impreza’s front facia will take yet another new styling direction, after previous facelifts were met with less than enthusiastic response. [...]

It looks promising. I’m one of the few who thought the airplane influenced design didn’t look too bad on the Impreza (the Tribeca’s nose is a whole ‘nother story – and a bad story at that) but I’ll wait until the design’s released. That grille somehow reminds me of a less expensive Mercedes knockoff, but maybe I’m just reading it wrong. Still it does have promise. I’d rather see a sedan design with fold-down rear seating.

1. subaru desparately needs a two door version, hatch or coupe… whatever
2. This looks good… for a 4 door
3. does look similar to the mazdaspeed 3… BUT this will have AWD.

If the new Impreza WRX has the 6-speed transmission from STi’s… I might be interested. If they’re using the same old 5-speed design… not interested.

My guess is that it is actually a Mazda3 mps, its too far a departure from subaru’s previous designs, there are no pumped wheel arches, and the grill looks far more mazda than subaru. I think the camo is made to look like a subaru

I’m guessing subaru is tired of trying endlesly to beat the mitsubishi evo after a 0% success rate in doing that, so they decide to take on the vw gti (the king of hatchbacks). By the way, if you know whats good for you, don’t mess with the evo!

would love to see it as a two door hatch a la volvo c30; also, the superior subaru awd will make this car much more fun to drive than than the fwd vw gti or mazda3; the sti at 330 hp will make it hard to beat; can’t wait…….
