(Update: The package – internally known as the “Tough Box” – will be marketed towards commercial customers, and will be available on the 2008 models.) Recent photos of Ford F-150 prototypes didn’t capture anything as strange as this pickup — a super long wheelbase extended cab with six “doors.”
Two side-access doors have been added to this prototype’s cargo box, immediately behind the cab. It’s difficult to tell though what exactly the doors open to, or, rather, into. One of the photographs shows what looks to be a lock box lined-up flush with the extra portals. If so, the enclosed storage area might serve the dual purpose of protecting groceries and tools while helping to stiffen the truck’s body, given the extra length and bed cutouts.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen such a concept. As recently as 2003 there was Chevrolet’s Cheyenne Concept Pickup that featured two side-access doors granting easy access to its open bed. The Cheyenne also bristled with all sorts of side-box storage options, but not a dedicated trunk like this mule. And if you go back far enough you’ll also encounter the 1961 Corvair Rampside pickup that offered its owners a fold-down bedside ramp to allow all sorts of payload to be rolled or carried into the back.

Way to go Ford, save that company. Completely ignore gas prices, completely ignore the standard size of a parking spot (one vehicle per spot, in case you forgot), completely ignore the fact anyone driving a truck that size needing extra storage has a trailer, a tool box, or a cover attached to the back.
Way to go Mr. Completely oblivious to save a company guy.

I think I can sum up teh Ford Exec thought process when this idea was thought up in a meeting;
Ford Exec1: “So, it looks like Honda built themselves a truck with a trunk, and people seem to really like it!”
Ford Exec2: “I know, brilliant idea!, How can we do something like that??”
Ford Exec3: “Well, we can’t exactly, our boxed frames won’t allow it.”
Ford Exec1: “Nuts. Well, extend the truck bed 3 feet and build in a box there then.”
Ford Exec2: “Brilliant!! Problem solved!!!”
Ford Exec1: “Great, now that’s sorted out, lets hop on the private jet and light up some cigars with blazing $100 bills!”
Ford Exec3: “Let’s Roll! HAHAHAHA!!!”

I think they also have a new step that lowers out of the top of the tail gate door. That step and this are better innovations than the storage space below the bed of the Ridgeline IMHO.
This is a good idea and especially handy if you are not 6′4″.

im not a redneck or a hick, live in so cal and definately have a use for something like this. serioulsy this would be perfect with a shortbed and extender, the old fashioned toolbox is gaudy and damages the truck. but imagine this as a quadcab longbed, it would be like driving a limo, short bed extended cab would still be shorter than an f350 quadcab.

I would suggest body-coloring the handles. Ford charges enough that they need not undercut people by not giving them paint on their door handles.
This is a good idea though. Toolboxes are a huge pain to get out of a truck, and they do indeed cause damage. So why not integrate one into the truck?

Some people on this msg board don’t understand what this is used for; it’s going to benefit a lot of commercial businesses. Instead of installing a box for your tools and other things, this doesn’t eat up the space of the bed. Another Ford innovation. This is why they will maintain their truck leadership for more than 30 years. They might not offer all the horsepower, but they still have the BEST trucks on the planet. They listen to the needs of the customer and Ford always delivers in the truck market. PERIOD!

Enough trucks already!!! We get it FORD makes great trucks, the best… whatever…
If FORD worked on its cars so diligently and so thoughtfully, they would not be falling off with no end in site. I mean, build the danged Interceptor and th GR-1 already! Where’s my new Cougar based on the Mustang? Why did you have the make a Thunderbird that sucked so bad? I want my AWD WRC-ready Focus! Do something about that “Taurus”! that is NOT a Taurus done better… its an insult to an American original. Could have made it into a smaller version of the Interceptor… (I want a Cougar!)
So many damn good ideas not being followed through with because of what? The Execs want to keep more money for themselves. There isn’t going to be ANY money, with that kind of attitude, to keep. Labor troubles? GM managed to work it out, FORD can do the same… Hell FORD has .. had more money that GM going into this mess. They can afford to grease a few wheels. Stop pretending that Trucks will be as big as they were. Cars are coming back into style big time. Trucks aren’t going away, but they aren’t going to be the biggest part of the market for too much longer.
I am surely to lose my love for FORD if I don’t see some real improve in the next couple of years. Adapt or die. This focus on Trucks is not helping FORD much. They will lose any chance to really get traction in the Car Market if they don’t really produce cars people want real soon. GM is sure to take every opening FORD lets slip by. If that continues, FORD will end up like International… people will forget it exists until they see one on the road and all they will make are trucks.

And now to all those people complaining that the F150 is long and big, guess what??? You don’t have to buy one. Go pick on Toyota! They just released a new Tundra that is big and long also.

ClubF150,
Euro cars are anything but underpowered. Who made the first proper, road-legal 1000hp car? Bugatti, owned by VW. Which companies make respected sports cars? Lotus, Caterham, BMW. Who makes some of the finest luxury cars? Mercedes. Which two companies make the best looking cars on the planet? Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin. What’s the best fast hatchback? VW Golf GTI. Who dominates F1? Ferrari and Renault.Who dominates Endurance racing? Audi’s R10. All your rubbish pickups and attempts at sports cars are overlooked in favour of PROPER, European CARS. The only American cars I respect are musclecars, the Corvette and the Viper.
BTW, if I spat on someone in a pickup, I would get away easily as I would be driving a car.

We have a good time joking with each other. I do however own a car also. 05 G6 GT, my wife drives an 02 325 Convertible (currently up for sale, waiting on a new 335 hardtop convertible). I just got my F150 a few months ago so I won’t be in the market for a new truck until 2011, hopefully Ford will win me back if not, I think the new Chevy’s are lookers!
