Spied: GM heavy duty pickups

08/03/2006, 11:04 PM

Popular Mechanics received some interesting spy photos of what appears to be a 2007 GM heavy duty pickup. For the first time, the high-capacity trucks will get unique styling to differentiate them from their lesser counterparts. Rumors suggest the Duramax will remain close to its current ratings of 360 hp and 650 lb-ft. of torque. [Front View | Side View | Rear View]

The thing with pickups is that they all have a similar profile. So even with all that camo, it generally looks like a pickup.

Some clues are evident in the front view but the side just says pickup.

Oh, come on! This is not true. Ford’s F-150 has very little in common with its Super Duty siblings. The styling differences between the Heavy Duty and regular GM pickups are more subtle. This fact notwithstanding, late model Silverado HD and Sierra HD pickup trucks can be recognized at a glance as different from their regular siblings.

Yuck. They look TERRIBLE without the camo. Keep the camo on please! Especially that terrible oversized grill.

Sorry, but the GMC looks like an exact copy of the current Ford F-250/350 nose.

Richard, I think they’re saying it’s a first for the General Motors trucks, there was no indication they were suggesting it was an industry first.

mike, When I said that the Ford Super Dutys have very little in common with the F-150, it is clear that I understand that it is not an industry first. However, the gist of my point is that it is not a GM first. The differences between the current and recent heavy duty Silverado/Sierra HD and regular Silverado/Sierra are more subtle. However, they are obvious to all but the blind eye, especially before the Silverado adopted the Avalanche grill and hood.

However, I do not regard this as a particularly good thing. Ford’s having essentially two completely different lines of pickup trucks within the F-Series increases costs. I don’t have the sales figures before and after the bifurcation of the F-Series, but my anecdotal observations indicate no accompanying increase in sales to justify the increase in costs.

Comparisons of the camoflaged new GM Heavy Duty trucks with their uncamoflaged regular siblings seem to show vehicles with a lot of common parts, especially doors, glass, etc. It will keep costs down and make repairs easier and less expensive. If true, then these new Heavy Duty trucks represent a continuation current GM design and engineering philosophy.
