1115
I was trying to say that the Americana (part of American culture) pony cars have no direct competitors from the Japs. Japan offers no cars in the same class as the Camaro, Mustang, or Challenger. If I wanted a Camaro, there is nothing as exciting or in any way comparable to it from Japan.

JJT - that was my point. This isn't a muscle car. I was simply responding to another guy who said that this would steal sales from the Camaro. Yea right!

deutsche - when did I ever say the Hyundai was not Korean? When I said "Japanese competition" was referring to Toyoda/Honda/Nissan

Commodore "Hyundai" MIGHT be the next toyota, but I hope it has higher aspirations than that.

I don't think people are going to buy the idea of a Korean (Or for that matter German) muscle car.

tripleonefluffer: I like the Skyline, but it's not the same kind of car. You KNOW how I feel about the NSX, but pray tell, exactly what "domestic's" ass will it cick?

LOL @ Commodore, who is not bias by the way. I'm sure the new Skyline will be all over the Iroc Z along with the POS offerings from Ford and Dodge.
Hyundai may not be able to do it with this Tiburon but the Skyline along with the new NSX will kick the Domestics ass in speed just like they kick it in resale reliability and build quality

Bullshit Flipper, the Camaro is pure Americana. No Asian sports car, however cheap it may be, can challenge it. People that buy the Camaro will buy it because it is beautiful, powerful, and fun. Hyundai can get people to buy their cars by undercutting the competitors' prices (thanks to unfair exchange rates) in most segments, but not this one. The Camaro along with the Challenger and the Mustang are untouchable by Japanese competition because there is nothing like them out of Japan

Too bad about the V8. It would have been an epic moment (what other Jap or Korean company has a RWD V8 coupe at other than the Lexus SC??), and probably would have been the last kick that busts Hyundai out of the gate and into the big leagues.

CaptainObvious: "Direct competitor to the BMW M3, Audi S5, Lexus IS500 coupe, and Cadillac CTS Super V-Series coupe!"
Those cars are not competitors.

I like this Hyundai, though I'll never be in the market for such a rig

Blakkarr, you're one rude dude. And you're the one trying to be all-knowing.

Nope, Hyundai WON'T ship both a turbo four and a V8 in their Tiburon replacement. I doubt they'll give up their flagship sedan V8 to a sportscar test mule that already has a turbocharged inline-four that you can clearly see in these pictures.

As for "cheap ass turbo setup", hold it. Put down your tuner car magazines and get your head out of this magical world where every intake and intercooler pipe is made out of expensive chromed metal. Have you ever seen a picture of a factory unmodified Supra twin turbo engine bay, Blakkarr? You haven't looked at one closely enough, because the pipe connecting the intake manifold's throttle body to the intercoolers looks a lot like a big RUBBER hose.

I haven't heard any confirmation that the Dodge Challenger will be offered in lower trim levels that would compete in the $25k-$30k price range, which is what this car will be going into. That market just isn't saturated with high powered V8 engines.

We're just talking about A BUNCH OF CARS. Chill out.

We’re just talking about A BUNCH OF CARS. Chill out.

This car has a cheap ass turbo setup.

Those rubber radiator hoses are a joke waiting to happen. It took some time but it finally made some sense. The thing that threw me were those rubber hoses. Even in a mass produced car you don't use radiator hoses for the turbo. The dry air will break down the hoses pretty fast. Normal exhaust tubing would make more sense and underscore their purpose. Maybe a plastic pipe like the intake manifold, that braided hose looks incredibly wrong as well. The rubber hose next to it is the radiator hose.

In any case, you got me. My mistake. Sorry.

But whatever. That still goes against what I was originally on about before and that is that it is very unlikely that Hyundai, having any marketing sense, will ship a turbo four and a V8, at least with similar power figures and/or cost, to the same market. It doesn't make much sense. So I seriously doubt we would see a turbo four and if we did it would be a mid level model with well less than the output of the V8.

You should read the earlier posts, nimrod. Then you might know what I'm responding to.

Pointing out the evidence does not make one ignorant, not realizing this does however, and claiming some sense of superiority over it makes one arrogant as well.

Besides I know how that all works. May you didn't or maybe you just like to jump in without knowing the whole conversation (if any of it) and just dropping a comment to sound like you know something you don't.

But thank you for pointing out the throttle body, jackass. I did actually work over that picture for about twenty minutes to be sure of what I was talking about how about you did you even read the previous posts buy others and then ALL of mine before even considering your ill-considered, lame-brained retort.

I know you want to be one of those guys who seems to know everything. I don't mind being wrong but In the matter of a mechanical component in a car not even on sale yet, I'm not,and given that the picture above has been clearly noted as a BASIC (Read: NO TURBO) inline four, everything you've said is in gross error.

Read everything before you even think of responding, SRT-4ken.

----------->blakkarr, u SERIOUSLY need to go back 2 the basics, because you SHOW'L don't know how a turbocharged engine works. AT ALL. nobody ever said that the thing on the right side was a turbo, because its not, its the THROTTLE BODY!LOL just to show you, i'll walk you through: you have the airfilter/box on the left side. the air leaves that, goes "under the engine"(as you said), strait to the turbo(still on the left side). the charged air leves the propeller and goes into that second pipe you see on the left side, going into the left side of the front intercooler, then flowing through to exit of the right side of the intercooler ending up in that hose you see on the right side of the engine, finally entering the throttle body/throttle valve. there.(man i'm nice) Now think about your comment.

Hyundai isn't going to offer a turbo four, at least in the US. That was a rumor thrown out there by someone with a wish list. That thing on the right side of the image of the engine is NOT a turbo, maybe a supercharger but even that I doubt. There are no tubes/pipes feeding directly into the engine as a Turbo or supercharger would. Even the intake manifold (far left of image) seems disappear somewhere UNDER the engine.

Besides, why would Hyundai do offer both in the same market? It would cut into their V8 sales. If Hyundai is going upscale they are not going to sell a turbo four in the same car as a V8, The most logical answer would be that the Turbo four is meant for the home market while the V8 will be sold in the US. This However may not scrub the possibility of a new "Tiburon", ditching the more expensive V6 for a turbo four that likely will make a modest 200+ hp... not 300+, if indeed this new car will be named "Tsunami".

Besides I said nothing about twenty-somethings with lead feet not wanting a turbo four. I just don't think they ALL want one. Hyundai may feel exactly the same way. Their ultimate goals may preclude it. Kia might get a Turbo Four in some car not yet offered. Maybe an AWD turbo-boosted Rondo?

Also where the devil are you getting you're info from? The Challenger will start... again START at $25K for a base V8 R/T and work it's way up to $40K-$45K for the SRT-8. DCX (or is it just Chrysler now?) want to compete with the Mustang and Camaro not the BMW 6-series. That might be an upscale 'Cuda's job... though doubtful.

I disagree. A turbocharged four cylinder can be very competent these days, well into 320 horsepower. Especially for twentysomethings with lead feet.

I don't understand how Hyundai is going to offer BOTH a turbo-4 as a base and an NA V-8 as a high performance version. From the looks of this, they'll be doing the turbo. The cost involved doesn't make sense to do both.

Someone needs to build a car in this formula and it doesn't have to compete with a $60k 435 horsepower Challenger.

I would expect just about 300 torquey and revvy horsepower.

The 240SX was a fairly big car. About the size of the current 350Z. 300hp from a V8 in this car is no big feat. Mustangs, on the Fox platform, have a wheel base of 100.3 inches. It is literallty the size of a Civic sedan and FORD did feild factory versions with 300+ hp. Saleen and Roush did the same as a rule.

Will Hyundai? Don't know but if Hyundai is as ambitious as they seem to be, they will do it. I'd be willing to bet 305-330hp, but the sticker may be over 30K. That's fine by me.. but if Hyundai doesn't want to be the odd man out, they will get that V8 at competitive outputs. There will be no fewer than 3 performance coupes with V8s in a few years and they will make at least 320 hp each for less than 30K (the Challenger may not make that though). Hyundai wants to make a muscle car or affordable sport coupe, they will have to deliver and a turbo four is not going to cut it considering who they will be catering to: grown young adults with money and lead feet.

But here, Hyundai will have to be cost conscious. The 350Z (not the Nismo), RX-8 and coming RX-7, the EVO X (I think), WRX (ignoring STi), and assuming I didn't miss any (the Supra is a $30k car even with the V6), Hyundai will have to price the car in the area of $24K-$29K to be reasonably competitive. Their Sedan will be more a Luxo-ride so a starter price of $29K sounds about right. With a sports coupe, Luxury can be second seater, so I can be happy to expect a sticker under $30K.

Anyway, Hyundai will do 300+ hp in a car the size of a 350Z or so. Either that or a turbo six, but the V8 sounds better to me.

I try not to let Hyundai excite me to much. You figure they're paying people shit per hour to work and their factories. Lord knows they get no benefits or anything like that... and they're able to undercut everyone on the price of their cars. I realize they've made great strides in quality and such in recent years, but it's a shame it's not a fair playing field.
