Spied in America: 2008 Smart ForTwo

08/03/2006, 12:16 PM

By admin

Leftlane reader Gerhard Rivera snapped some great photos of the forthcoming 2008 Smart ForTwo in testing in the United States. Spotted at a gas station in the Colorado Rockies, the car is one of the first Smart prototypes we’ve heard of being in America. In late June, DaimlerChrysler announced it would bring the Smart brand to the United States in 2008. These photos confirm that the ForTwo will get a new headlight design to reflect the change at sister company Mercedes from dual-oval headlamps to sleeker one-piece lights. Gallery after the jump…

I mean. this thing would have to get 40mpg in the city for me to even consider one. Does anybody know the pricing?? it better be no more than 15k either…lol.

You can get a Yaris that’ll get over 40mpg for WAY less than 15k with a ton more cargo space and seating. There has to be something more to this idea… I don’t see huge sales happening anytime soon.

I agree with snoboardguy21…there are definitely other “bigger” subcompact options for probably the same price or less. Yeah, yeah the smarts have that crazy alloy safety frame and other techno features…but does joe average cheap car buyer even know/care about that?

Also, I think I read somewhere that the US emissions regs really cuts down its mileage compared to the euro versions.

ooooooooo premium gas for 3.29 I WISH i payed 3.62 for gas yesterday :( ………….ok back to the car. i would honestly say if my fiance didnt think this car was weird and ugly(we saw one on the streets in mexico during the summer along with the smart roadster – which she did like) i would buy it for back and forth to work and for finding parking in the city. i still might….. screw her she has her car for daily driving

i saw a maroon one here in Santa Barbara CA a couple days ago (same town where the new M3 was spotted a couple months ago)– Mississippi plate– i was like, its out already??

quick thoughts: this isnt going to be targeted at avg joes, the demographic is urban core dwellers for whom parking is a bigger factor than being able to haul econo-sized boxes of froot loops from costco. “huge” sales aren’t the point– but based on the recent sales growth in Vespa scooters and Mini Coopers (econo transporation with more style points than the yaris or fit or accent), my bet is that the Smart will have a nice niche waiting for it.

..’sides?! What red-blooded, ‘Merican with a half-full sack would buy one of these?! A nurse friend got a Yaris coupe: not bad for the $$.

They will be soon. In the UK the government hiked prices to make money but now it seems George Bush has taken a few lessons from Tony Blair. Matter of time mate

The smart that we get here in Canada is deisel only, and it gets well over 40 mpg in the city. Mine averages 55 mpg (imperial gallon) and does over 70 mpg on the highway. Usually, deisel fuel is cheaper than gas (not always) but the cost of operation is pretty low. This is not a family car, but intended as a second or third car for in town commuting, and it fills that role very well.

The US-based Smart will probably be non-diesel. Which would be too bad.

Snoboardguy21 & snork. It’ll probably be starting at 15k. However, the interior quality will be lightyears ahead of the yaris. I’s interior quality mtches that of a mercedes.

you yankies are so stupid…it’s all about size isn’t it. keep paying through the nose for gas as you cruise down the highways in 3 tons of detroit steel. can the world really afford to keep using non renewable energy in such a way? and why do you need 4 seats when usually only one big fat ass is in the car at any given time? time to use that head for more than a hat rack good buddy! i’m 6′2″ and i wouldn’t trade my smart convertible for anything. i just laugh at the poor bastards in their 4 x 4’s when ever i see them filling up……fools!!

I see a red Smart fourtwo roaming the streets where I live in houston every now and then

I can’t wait for it to be on sale
I’ve seen that the mpg is impressive around 52 miles to the gallon
and from what I’ve learned is that the pricing will be around $13,000 USD

I cannot wait for the Smart to get here. I have done all the research I can find on the car. If it is T-boned, the axles take the impact, not the doors like a full size car. There are spec sheets available or go to smart.com for the usa.

I agree with Belinda, I can’t wait for this to get to the US of A! And by the way all you folks who are worried about getting T-Boned, that kind of will get you pretty messed up in just about any current small car out there. check out the side impact crash tests at http://www.highwaysafety.org. The smart, because of the safety shell, and it being so light might actually be safer, because a side impact will hit at least one of the axles and the ultra light weight will allow the whole car to move over instead of just collapsing in on itself. Do your research and don’t be so close minded. This is great for the US because it has the potential to help bring this whole small efficient segment into our country.

why do these idiots keep saying that the smart will cost 25k. it will not. in canada, which is the closest you can get to the american cost, it only costs 13k. there the records are set straight.
