Spied: New BMW roadster — it’s not a Z4!

02/07/2007, 3:29 PM

By admin

Earlier photos of another camouflaged roadster prototype have sparked quite a debate within the spy community as to whether the model we’re seeing here is the next generation Z4, or a totally new roadster dubbed, by most, as the Z9 -though it could be called Z6.

Pictures of the prototype that were published in January were taken in Munich, and had a fabric — or fabric camo — roof while the one were seeing here has a solid retractable hardtop. If it’s really the Z9 (or Z6, if you prefer) then we have a future successor to the retro-styled BMW Z8 and a possible competitor to the Mercedes SL.

Still, spies, analysts and other experts are still confused as to which model this is. Both sides have strong points, even though the camouflaged roadster that we’re seeing is obviously much larger than the Z4.

Some sources are still saying that the next-generation Z4 will be doing a bit of “growing up” to make room for an entry-level 1-series-based roadster dubbed Z2.

On the other hand, noticing the side window covers and the folding metal roof, we’re very sure that we’re seeing the Z9, as we highly doubt that the next-gen Z4 will be fitted with an electric hard-top.

In addition, unnamed industry sources attending the Chicago Auto Show today have all but confirmed that this is no Z4!

We’re still uncertain about the name, but we are sure that BMW will be giving the SL a run for its money!

Once again, BMW will try to enter the high-end sportscar market…wonder if it will fail like the Z8 did? What a POS that was compared to the rest of the market.

Look closely at the lower front fascia… radiator? or intercooler? A roadster with the 3.0 Twin-turbo motor would be very cool!

Either way its no good looking car. Still trying to figure out who would buy this. If you want luxury then just buy a Mercedes SL which looks way better. If you want a sports car then just buy a Porsche 911. Infact either way just buy a porsche,Why buy anything else?

I reckon they will struggle to sell these cars just like the way they struggle to sell the 6 series and Z8.

Too small for the V10 of the M5/M6.

Lets see if this goes the way of the M1 and Z8

Jazz, thats exactly what i was thinking..too small to be a super sports car and either an SL fighter.

I know it’s disguised…..but still, so far it looks like a competitor to the Miata, not an SL.

I hope BMW can make an SL beater, I personally find the SL to be very attractive, very competent, but just so run of the mill these days, the look has gotten long in the tooth in my opinion, but on the other hand it is a pretty classic design. The BMW 6-Series has a look that I favor, it certainly has a more modern, edgy feel to it, but it just can’t compete with the SL in driving dynamics. Hopefully BMW will beat Mercedes this time around, as they are more of an enthusiast company which I appreciate

Hoenstly how do they manage to get spy shots so frequently? I know it’s a game between the photographers and the manufacturers, but to get such incredible close-up shots all the time? Do the companies pay the photographers and tell them where they’ll be?

As for the car, doesn’t this overlap completely with the 6-series? I know the 6 is more of a luxury coupe rather than a roadster, but won’t this cannibalize sales?

BMW can’t beat the SL at its own game.
Why try, that’s just silly — this coming from a BMW fan…

Thing is, if you wanna make a car to rival a SL but just handle better then you have a car competing in the Porsche 911 category. BMW have always made better drivers cars then mercedes but mercedes have always made better luxury cars.

The SL is a grand tourer (GT)in other word a luxury car but handle well enough to get the balance of comfort and sportiness. The 911 is a sports car. This BMW is gonna get killed by Porsche in the handling and Mercedes in comfort.

They should have made it Mid-engine like the R8 to get the best in handling and give porsche a real fright. I guess its to late now

ONE LAST THING NOTICE HOW MERCEDES SL AND PORSCHE NEVER STEP ON EACH OTHERS TOES? MAYBE BECAUSE THEY BOTH KNOW THEIR CARS OWN THE MARKET THEY AIM AT AND CAN’T COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER BECAUSE THEY WILL LOSE.

i think stuart is right. and still even if this car is better than the Benz, the Benz has better pimp factor. still from what i see, i dont think it is going to be as ugly as the rest of the BMW line up

the 6 series is too heavy and laid back to be a true SL fighter… its like calling a buick a 3-series competitor. Personally… ive never cared for the “SL” segment.

Stuart I think you’re right but for different reasons.
Porsche ,imo , considers adding too much luxury to their cars anathema top what the car is designed for.

Mercedes has cultivated a market that looks for a more supple feel yet with the punch of a big torque, for the SL.

These two comnepete occassionally (SL AMG vs any luxed out 911) but in the grand scheme of things if it takes your niche, tuned car to compete then you aren’t in the same category

Maybe this is a BMW Z1? Those guys seema awfully cramped so its either a Z4 or smaller. Not larger.

Another M1 is not very likely as BMW doesn’t want to make all model with a M-series as AMG has done with Mercedes. However spiritually the closest you can get is the 135i with the twinturbo 3ltr straight six.

p.s. The 6 series is a 6 seat coupe so would be competing against the Mercedes CLS. They are struggling to sell them, so how the hell they think they can shift these (unless they are limited stock) is well and truly beyond me.

It’s a roadster for girls. Should fit right in with the rest of the BMW lineup. Real drivers will automatically skip right over this POS and head to their Pontiac dealer to buy a Solstice. Here in Michigan, the only time you see a BMW is if it is abandoned on the side of the road.

GMnumberone4ever…

Are you kidding me about being on the side of the road? Give me your reliability report on your beloved GM products as well the resale value, the name of their plastics company and the resignations of their design team(especially pontiac).

You obviously work on the GM assembly paint line. Remember that the paint is for body parts not inhaling. Breathe through the mask and think with your brain.

Pontiac needed a lot of help for the design of the G6 and the Solstice and believe me it wasn’t from the past design team. How many plastic moldings can one car manufacturer use on a car?

The M6 can compete in the SL market and it has. Many SL owners have moved over to that segment. I like the SL classy design(always have) but it does drive line a tank. The M6 Vert. slips into the segment fine.
