Spy shots confirm BMW Z9 testing

01/17/2007, 3:45 PM

By admin

While previous spy shots of a new BMW roadster prototype didn’t give us a good idea of its size, a new round of photos seem to confirm the vehicle is indeed BMW’s new Z9 — a competitor to the Mercedes SL-Class. Despite its disguise, one can recognize the rather long hood suggesting a front engine and rear drive. It’s also clear this is no BMW Z4.

A spiritual successor to the BMW Z8, the new Z9 roadster will probably be priced above the 6-Series. Once the new sports car hits the market, it will meet a large number of serious competitors. Among them the just launched Audi R8, a possible Mercedes AMG gullwing, the new Lexus LF-A, and Acura NSX.

The prototype’s canvas top is fake, hiding a a retractable metal roof beneath. A variety of six- and eight-cylinder models could be offered, with a range-topping Z9 M receiving either a 500 horsepower V10, or 600 horsepower V12. Gallery after the jump…

So is BMW really serious about taking on the Corvette this time around?

Probably not, since they concentrate on the more femenine side of the market. And since BMW quality is so far in the toilet at the moment, this new Z should follow suit and spend more time on the back of flatbed trucks than on the roads trying to keep up with the vette.

GM troll pooh again …sigh

BMW thinks that the Z8 was iconic but to me it was not especially well received, sought after or even remembered. Here’s to hoping they can get itr right this time. I wonder will BMW ever make a mid engined M1 again?

This thing will try to beat the SL by copying it. How stupid is that. They tried it before and failed miserably, what makes them think they can do it this time around considering they find it hard shifting the 6 series? Plus this car looks so much uglier then the Z8 let alone the SL.

Though it’s difficult (and you come across as looking rather foolish) to make comments about the styling of a well disguised test car, I don’t think the Z9 will have the same cache of the SL-Class, the same way that the 7-Series doesn’t have the same cache of the S-Class. Entirely a subjective opinion of course.

What is not subjective, is that I’m looking out my office window to some kind soul in an E-Class giving a boost to a person in a CTS.

GM#0… let me ask you this. GM is in the biggest hole its been in. They’re products are declining and every single model might as well start the same on the assembly line. BMW builds great cars. Yes, the Z8 didnt work because of the timing of launch, had they held out a little longer and made it more practical, it would be a hot selling product. This Z9 should be sexy and well built.

i gotta disagree jazz… i think the Z8 was unbelieveably beautiful. my guess is this thing wont hold a candle to it.

but i do wish they would make another M1. that’d be badass

BAMF, I have to agree with JAZZ. Regardless of its look (my opionion was that I thought it was conservatively beautiful as well), it’s not an icon and most people probably don’t even know it existed. Buenos is right….not even close to the cache of the Mercedes.

Its a folding Hard-top roadster, remind you of anything. Going by previous design (6,7) it will look nowhere near as good as the SL. The SL should hold its value better to.

What good is it if it’s going to break down all the time. Check out the Solstice and the Sky, they have been bulletproof. Plus they look a hell of a lot better than this girlie POS. Maybe BMW is targeting the Miata crowd who have a few extra bucks to waste?

while the GMnumberone4ever posts are indeed rather foolish, they are no more so than many of you other posters anti-GM rants in the other direction. Whats good for the goose…
Reason should rule the day, weather you like a product/manufacturer or not. That is what creates worthwhile give and take on a board like this. IMHO

THIS IS NOT Z8 / Z9!!!!!

IT’S E89 Z4 (coming in 2009).

It’s way to early for Mk2 Z8 prototypes. Mk2 Z8 is coming in 2010/11, and will be SL rival – also size wise.

If you do not believe do size-to-size comparison with SL (find SL pics them via eg. Google). You’ll see SL is much bigger than the car in the spy pics – meaning the car we are looking at is indeed E89 Z4.

Cheers.

Z8 was a classic the first day it was in a showroom. That thing was beautiful from every angle, and had the power and performance to go with it. A dream ride for sure. Now, I really like Chris Bangle’s work, and here is why. You know it’s a BMW from 2 blocks away. The DNA of BMW is in every crease, body line, and highlight. The car could have no logos, emblems, or markings, and you’d know it’s a BMW. You can’t really say that about GM, who throw different grilles and emblems on the same vehicle, again and again, and expect me to care if its somehow different.

Oh, and I’m fully aware Chris Bangle didn’t do the z8. That was Henrik Fisker in their California “designworks” studio.

I like BMWs -even the bangled ones for the most part, but that surfboard sculpted shape in the side of this is gay. I hope that’s there to mask the real design so the casual looker sees a z4.

It is the Z9. There will not be another Z4. And you cannot make a judgment call on how the car looks at this stage. Look at all the cladding on there. Making out the true lines on the car is impossible. Just wait. Im sure it will be a real looker.

GMhooker#1, LOL drop your foolish act. You only make yourself look as if you have downs syndrome. If indeed you are pulling an act. Try not over acting so much. It turns ppl off. You remind me of one of those crazy over acting movie stars of the old black and white films. No one respects you here, we all laugh at your comments. Is that what you want?

This is not the new Z9?? maby probably the new Z6 replaceing the Z4, but that would be three years out. But I know that whoever said that BMWs reliabuilty is down is wrong, second the Z8 did very well and sold like hot cakes. They did not intend on selling it for very long in the first place, that and if you can find one used, good luck and they are still going for all the money its a collectors car and you will see them going threw Barrett Jackson in the next few years.
