NEW FUTURE MARKET
  • Spyker officially takes ownership of Saab

    By Drew Johnson

General Motors doesn’t have a sterling reputation for selling unwanted brands. The Detroit automaker failed to complete the sale of its Saturn brand to Penske and has also seen one deal to sell its Saab brand go by the wayside. However, the Swedish brand is now officially safe as Saab has transferred ownership to Spyker.
Spyker Cars N.V. officially announced on Tuesday that it has completed its acquisition of General Motors’ Saab brand. Going forward, Saab and Spyker will operate as sister companies under parent company Spyker Cars N.V. Jan Åke Jonsson will act as Saab CEO.

“We are delighted – Saab’s future is now secure,” Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars N.V., said in a statement. “From today we will be concentrating all of our efforts into reviving Saab and transforming it into a sustainable and profitable company with the confidence to be bold. We will reinforce the emotional experience between Saab drivers and their cars and we will focus on Saab’s historical strengths in the fields of independent thinking, aircraft heritage, ecological performance and motorsport.”

The announcement also marks the end of Saab bankruptcy protection under European courts.

Good luck Spyker! Hope your ownership of Saab will be longer than your stint in Formula One.

that statement kinda reads like a boyfriend whose in trouble with his girl…”reinforce the emotional experience”…does this mean they won’t forget to send flowers on their customers’ birthdays? they promise to leave the seat down?

****ing A! Congrats to both Spyker and Saab Automobile! And a big middle finger to all the mainstream media that have been trying to trash this deal from day 1.

No one really cared about Saab before they heard the news that GM might have killed them.

Good, nothing to Saab about then. Still sort of a pointless brand, but good luck none-the-less.

Yes, I heard it, motorsport! With GM, they were in between trying to sell safety, cold weather performance, luxury but not much sportiness.

“We are delighted – Saab’s future is now secure,” Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars N.V., said in a statement.

On the contrary, Saab’s future is anything but secure. Saab had better forge alliances with other automakers, and pronto, because small automakers can’t do it alone. That’s why Saab was sold to GM in the first place.

How are they going to turn a profit if Spyker has yet to turn a profit? Blind leading the blind anyone?

Anything is safe out of GMs deathtrap. That’s what they’re good for. Buying companies and killing them off. Well atleast now SAABs future is heading in a positive direction. I hope Spyker takes them to a new level like Volvos level.

And if anyone wants to argue with me over the FACT that GM nearly destroyed SAAB with their badge engineered $hit like the 9-7X then read this last months issue of Motor Trend where it’s a known fact that it’s all GMs fault and it gives you the proof. Unfortunately I can’t find it on the website so I have to reference it through the magazine.

howsmydriving – GM purchased SAAB in an attempt to get back at Ford for outbidding them when they were trying for Jaguar. That’s all. That’s how GM works. And its in the Motor Trend article as I mentioned above. They take $hits bigger than their a$$es can handle.

Very good news! I hope Spyker gets its lower emissions requirements from Saab’s high volume cars… and I hope Saab gets some real pizzaz in its lineup (including a new Sonett sportscar) now that it is under the ownership of a supercar manufacturer.

Well, lets hope they don’t ignore them the way GM and then attempt a half arse effort at a revival. That said, I doubt Spyker can afford to do that.

Yeah, no one cares or had ever cared about this brand..except people like me who own one. Nice work Spyker, now just revive the Viggen badge with modern design and AWD or RWD and you’ll see success.
