Spied: SsangYong Chairman replacement

11/09/2007, 10:08 AM

By Drew Johnson

Spy photographers have spotted a prototype for the SsangYong Chairman replacement car testing in Europe. Believed to be a production model of the Wz concept shown earlier this year, the new car is expected to replace the old Chairman model — which was only sold in Korea — and be sold worldwide.

Power is said to come from a 3.6L twin-turbo V6, rated at 365 horsepower. Power will be sent to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

SsangYong intends for its new model to compete with the likes of the BMW 5-series and Audi A6 when it goes on sale. There has been no official time frame given for the launch of the new model, but SsangYong officials indicated that they would like to see a production model of the Wz concept on the market by 2011.

A 5-series competitor? Don’t make me laugh. From what I can see, it looks like little more than a cheap Chrysler.

I reckon it will take another 50 years before customers will even consider looking at this ugly piece of tinfoil.

Isn’t the last picture on the lower right a pic of the LWB Genesis?

04focus is right. Just looking at the window lines, that is not the same car.

I recall in my younger years during trip to So. Asia some scantly dress girls were screaming SsangYong and I am sure they were not trying to sell a car. Or may be I misinterpreted.

Sounds good on paper, but mabey they should set their standard a little lower than the 5 series first.

Gitcypher, I knew SOMETHING was familiar about it. That’s actually pretty damn accurate.

Side profile looks a bit Avenger to me, though..

Ssangyong is the only manufacturer whose cars actually look *better* with camouflage.

Hmmm, I thought the title of this thread referred to the actual replacement of the company’s chairman, not the car. Either way, nothing’s changed in terms of my interest. We’ll see in 2020.

It’s not ugly! Maybe the chairman of the company was replaced.

Well considering their interior breaks down just as fast as an Audi A6 and the 5 series, they really should try to compete.

autonut: was it Ssangyong or Sarang-hae?

I don’t remember what it was called, but some of them were very, very talented!

Looks very cheap for a couple of reasons.

-Low belt line, especially the front hood.
-Very flat looking roof line, especially compared to the window sills.
-Long overhang, without being elegant. The roofline doesn’t cleanly slope into the back, and neither does the front end, rendering the fanatical three box design.
-The wheels are too small and the proportions out of shape, giving the impression of a tall, awkward design.

They have a long ways to come people… I’m sure they’ll climb to the top by copying designs, and then making their own design language much like Hyundai, Toyota and Honda have done, but they still have a ways to climb…

They have a loooong way to go before they can even *think* about competing with Audi, let alone BMW.

And I intend to bone Victoria Beckham tonite……which is much more likely than what SsangYong intends to do.

Other sites on the Web are identifying the vehicle with the Hoffmeister kink as the Hyundai Genesis.. and the larger vehicle with the more rounded roofline as a future Hyundai Equus replacement.

So which is it?
