Movie Spoiler: Stark Formula 1 Race Car from Iron Man II

06/11/2009, 5:15 PM

By Drew Johnson

Iron Man II, staring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, won’t hit the movie theaters until May of 2010, but we have an up-close and exclusive look at Stark’s custom race car. The race car — designed as an F1 look-a-like was spotted on set in Los Angeles.

Besides the car, and Robert Downey Jr., other stars on tap for Iron Man II include Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Micky Rourke, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson.

This photo, taken at studio-built Monaco Grand Prix replica near Hollywood, is the first we’ve seen of Stark’s car. The car spotted appears to be a fully functional prop, but it remains unclear what engine is powering the movie car. Hopefully we’ll be able to get more pictures soon from the Marvel Comics’ racetrack!

I wonder why he needs a custom race car and how a car fits into a plot that has him flying around in a super-suit…

Oh well, I know I’ll end up blowing 10 bucks just to find out.

Does not look like an F1 car at all. Maybe some of the junior Formulaes.

Current F1 cars are so far and away cooler and crazier than this car. This one looks like it hails from the early to mid 1990s.

I might guess that it’s actually supposed to be an Indy car. It’s a more American motorsport than Formula 1. Either way, it looks nothing like an actual F1 car.

Yeah, I was going to say its more heavily based on another current formula or a vintage F1 design.

Cool looking car, but a fantastic movie. As a Mechanical Engineer, I hope to have a garage/toy shop like his… and that R8? Oh man…

@johnnycanuck,

Renny Harlin + movie = disaster. He’s a perennial favorite on many people’s WDOAT list.
