Many driving enthusiasts will profess their love for the manual transmission until the day the drop, but the advantage of three-pedal driving are quickly disappearing, says auto columnist Robert Farago. That’s because the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) from the Volkswagen Group is poised to change how the world views performance transmissions. “Even with its quirks, the DSG rules– to the point where the clutch pedal and traditional manual gearbox is a mechanical redundancy, a dead device shifting,” writes Farago. “In fact, any car manufacturer who doesn’t have a DSG or something similar installed in their performance-oriented products will soon be at a tremendous disadvantage.”
