The sport of drifting may have originated in Japan, but nothing is more capable of doing a big, smoky doughnut than a lump of American iron. Vaughn Gittin Jr. recently proved this point when he traveled across the U.S. in a bone-stock 2010 Ford Mustang GT, setting the unofficial world’s record for the longest drift along the way.
Gittin and 0-60 Magazine road tripped in across the United States last December, with the Las Vegas Motor Speedway being one of the stops along their route. While at the track, Gittin decided to see just how far he could drift Ford ’s newest pony car.

As it turns out, the stock Mustang GT is capable of traveling well over a mile sideways – 6,285 feet to be exact. Although the world record run has yet to be verified by Guinness, it looks as though Gittin smashed the previous record of 4,137 feet, as evidenced by the accompanying video.
