Safe driving is a concern for anyone that gets behind the wheel of a car, but one Illinois town went a little too far in its effort to promote the rules of the road. In order to get drivers to pay attention to stop signs, the village of Oaklawn, Illinois put up several humorous signs below stop signs, but the Department of Transportation rule that they were actually in violation of federal code.
In all, the witty signs were placed near or under 50 stop signs throughout Oaklawn, according to FoxNews.com. While the signs don’t seem like that bad of an idea, the Department of Transportation ordered that the signs be taken down or Oaklawn would lose federal funding.
The total cost of the project was $1,700, but Joe Taxpayer won’t be footing that bill. 3M actually funded the project as the company planned to use the signs in a promotional brochure.
