I think it’s hilarious that some people feel that unions are somehow this great guardian of the middle-class. Unions once served a vital role in our society… but that was many years ago before there were any regulations with regard to the workplace here in the US. But these days, many unions (ESPECIALLY the UAW) exist solely for the pockets of the union leadership. When one really thinks about it, unions are some of the most anti-American organizations in this country… it’s an absurd notion that a person be required to join and sign over part of their paycheck to such groups in order to get their paycheck at all… every American worker should have the right to negotiate and deal directly with their employer instead of being required to pay some buffoon (who only cares about his own job, not theirs) to speak for them. It’s bullshit… I can and WILL speak for myself… I can and WILL deal directly with my employer. I’ve only ever had one job that was a union job and that lasted for a whole two weeks… I was in highschool and I decided to get a job at the local supermarket… after I started I was told that I HAD to join the union and that I HAD to pay dues to the union whether I wanted to or not… I said I didn’t HAVE to do anything, that there was no way I would, and summarily walked out. There are plenty of middle-class workers that get along just fine without the interference of a union. My own household is a prime example… the wife is a teacher and the AT for a local highschool… she has no say when it comes to getting a raise or a change in benefits or anything, she HAS to have the teacher’s union handle all of it every couple of years (which is extraordinarily pointless because teachers aren’t allowed to strike here). Whereas at my job, once a year I walk into the executive director’s office, examine and summarize the performance and efficiency of my department, and present my case for a raise – usually to the tune of 4-5%… at the end of the month, he takes the request to the board along with my department evaluation and I get my raise. So now, a decade later I make about 20-grand more a year than when I started all because I think and speak for myself… I don’t need some fat, ignorant twat to do it for me.

While I genuinely hate to see any Americans loose their jobs, I feel no sympathy for UAW members because they’re nothing but sheep… and sheep are eventually led to their slaughter. Pretty much nobody wants a pay cut… but even less want no job at all. The best thing a UAW worker could ever do for themselves is to stop eating the BS their union leaders feed to them and realize that they neither deserve nor have a right to their job and that their lucky to have it, but more importantly that the UAW is wholly counterproductive to them keeping their job.

If any of them had even a modicum of common sense, their next strike would be against the UAW.

Going from $26/hour to $15/hour would be a big hit for anybody and none of us would be happy about it. If it happened to me though, I would continue to work there just long enough to find a better or better paying job.

The minimum wage in Mexico is $5/day. The bigger and better plants, probably like AAM in Guanajanto/Leon/Queretaro area start at $20 per day, plus overtime and benefits. An experienced operator who works a lot of overtime can bring home as much as $20,000/year and that’s fat cash. There is one union in Mexico and the rules are different industry to industry, plant to plant.

Just how big is Mexico becoming as a manufacturing centre? Whether it’s by intent or as a direct result of action like this, there sure seems to be a lot of business headed their way these days. And with the dollar at or near par it’s sure not coming up to my neck of the woods anytime soon. Union workers in the US and Canada are treading on some pretty soft ground right now. So soft they’re getting stuck in the mud and left behind. At least the CAW had the sense to settle with Ford quickly and I suspect they won’t put up much of a fight with GM and Chrysler either when the time comes. Does that make the CAW smarter than certain factions of the UAW? I don’t know, but at least they seem to have enough sense to cover their asses before someone kisses their buts goodbye.

You know what, I used to work for an automotive company. We supplied front and rear sub-frames to Nissan as our main customer, and a few to honda. It was the WORST job I have ever had, and I was an engineer there! Your there for 11-14 hours a day on a regular basis, programming, designing tooling, plus a million other things sp people can build the assembly line the right way and build the part according to your customer’s specs. Your pay NEVER increased, but the heads at our company increased theirs! Because the auto industry has ups and downs, and I was working in it during a downturn. But, they sure as hell increase your workload. So do I think unions suck? Most of the time. But, I think they keep crap like 70hour weeks from happening then coming in on sat and sun getting 1

If you keep your workers happy, you don’t “HAVE” to deal with the UAW… Honda should be proof of that.

If the UAW ever does to Honda what it’s doing to GM, they’ll do with their car plants what they’re doing with their motorcycle plant – move it back to Japan and nobody there will have jobs.

GM has proved time and time again that they’re just going to move shit to Canada or Mexico, or get cars from Europe or Australia so they don’t have to deal with the UAW. The UAW is killing American jobs because of this, and the stupid rednecks behind the UAW are letting it happen. I don’t feel sorry for them one bit.

I have no sympathy for the guys. They saw it coming 100 miles away. Gas prices are up… demand for trucks and SUVs is down… ofcourse GM is going to cut production. They just forced GM into doing it a little bit early, which is probably best in the long run.

I’m not celebrating the loss of jobs… I’m celebrating another nail in the coffin of an unfair union run by greedy idiots.

By the same token everybody is ecstatics when there are troubles with foreign manufacturers, albeit majority of “jap” cars sold in US are made in US by American workers. This is consolation for those who write “the profits go overseas” – well GM’s profits (if any as well as Ford’s and Chrysler’s) will STAY here in pockets of Lutz, Wagoner, Ford etc, but jobs are gone. As well as paychecks, taxes on paychecks and goods those paychecks would by. Those goods may be produced by you and I.
